Embracing the uncertainty

THIS month, I celebrate my first anniversary
as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social
Sciences at University of Nottingham
Malaysia (UNM). I am sure people
reading this column will be familiar with
the blend of enthusiasm, excitement and
anxiety that comes with taking up a new
job or challenge.
For me, that usual mix was magnified
tenfold. I joined UNM during the first wave
of Covid-19 as the world began to shut its
borders in efforts to contain the virus. I
spent my first two months leading
colleagues, supporting students, and trying
to hit the ground running from 6,500 miles
away, across intermittent Internet
connections and with a good day’s time
