Prayer of the Holy Spirit

Altogether: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of
your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face
of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your
faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your
consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(For Catholic students only)

“If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give
you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth…..”

Our forefather sealed their promises with blood compacts. Jesus did more than that, for He
shed His blood to seal God’s promise of redemption. He also gives the assurance to His
friends that He will be with them until the end of time.

Promise of the Advocate

1
“But now I going to the one who sent me, and not of you asks me, ’Where are going?’ But
because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you
that I go. For If I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But If I go, I will send Him to
you. And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteous and
condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me; righteous: because I am going to the
Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation: because the ruler of the world has
been condemned.” “I have much to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he
comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he
will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that coming. He will glorify me,
because he will make from what is mine and declare it to you, Everything that the Father
has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it you.”

The special function of the Paraclete is to teach and remind the disciples of the words of
Jesus. These two functions are similar in nature.

The Spirit of Christ in the Fullness of Time

Only when the hour has arrived for his glorification does Jesus promise the coming of the
Holy Spirit, since his Death and Resurrection will fulfil the promise made to the fathers. The
Spirit of truth, the other, Paraclete; will be given by the Father in answer to Jesus’ prayer; he
will sent by the Father in Jesus name ; and Jesus will send him from the Father’s side, since
he comes from the Father. The Holy Spirit will come and we shall know him; he will be with
us forever; he will be with you forever; he will remain with us. The Spirit will teach us
everything, remind us of all that Christ said to us and bear witness to him. The Holy Spirit
will lead us into all truth and will glorify Christ. He will prove the world wrong about sin,
righteousness, and judgement.

A lot of us have experienced tearful goodbye of people close to our hearts in sending off a relative
migrating elsewhere, the parting of ways among classmates during the moving up ceremony, or even in
breaking up relationship. It is always difficult to be in these situations for we never could tell what the
future holds without our loved ones right by our side. But we find consolation in dwelling on memories
of the past. At certain stages of our life, we experience uncertainties and fears. We often feel lost when
we have no one to lean on or talk to about what we are going through, until someone help us. It is when
we are the lowest moments of our lives that we become aware of the assurance of love from our family,
relatives, and friends through their care and concern. We often tell them, “ Walang iwanan”

The same thing must have been felt by the apostles when the time came for Jesus to gloriously return
to the Father. As we read the story of the Ascension of our Lord, we feel the sadness in their hearts as
He was bidding them goodbye. He told His disciples that if they loved Him, they should be glad that He
would not be left alone like orphans. He promised to send a Paraclete (parakletos) – the Advocate, who

2
is called the Holy Spirit –whom the Father will send in the same manner by which the Son was sent. To
an orphan, the coming of someone to take care of him or her is an incredibly happy thing. For us
Filipinos, we understand a promise as a word of honor (palabra de honor).

It is a word we have to put our trust in (pagtitiwala). The one whom Jesus sends would be the apostles’
source of strength and courage to equip them for the work of evangelization. He is the Holy Spirit who
will teach them everything and remind them of what Jesus had told them. He is the same Spirit from
whom our Christian convictions springs forth.

The Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ marks the end of His earthly mission. He expects His apstles to
continue what He has entrusted to them- a mission of making God’s love known to all of humanity.
They have been given the authority to go out into the world and to proclaim the Good News of the
Kingdom of God. They have a vital and essential role to play in announcing the salvation Christ has
won by transforming death into a new life.

Jesus also offered the apostles peace that the world will not be able to give. This is the peace that will
remove the trouble in their hearts so that they will be no longer afraid. But Jesus knew that they would
Not be able to do this just by themselves, so He promised to be with them through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is Ipse harmonia est ( He himself is harmony) or the “one who gives different charisms
(gifts)” that unites us a church. The gift of the Holy Spirit is what helps us in our day to day experiences
as we bring Christ everywhere we go and whatever circumstances we will be in, may it be a t home, in
school, in church, at the mall, the park, the court, the gym, the shopping mall, among the others.

Just like the apostles, we are all called to be of service to our neighbour. Christ expects us to be His
living witnesses in preaching the Good News in the kind words that come out of our mouth and in the
good deeds that manifest our being instruments of God’s love. We must continue the work of those
who have gone before us and help build the Kingdom of God here on earth as we look forward to it in
the next life. Our prayer should be that Jesus will renew within us the work of the Spirit so that we may
know what is true and have the strength to do it right.
