A. Preliminary Activity Drill
Have a drill on basic addition facts with sums up to 10.
Review
Illustrate addition by putting together in a new set and
write the correct answer in the box.

Motivation

Show a rose flower (real or picture).


Ask: What is this? What do you call this flower here in our
place? Do you have this flower in your place? Here in
our school, do we have it? For those who have, do
you take care of it? (Infuse the KBI. Tell something
about a rose flower.)
B. Developmental Activity 1
Activity
Present the problem below.

Mother asked Jean to pick 7 white rose flowers and


Grace to pick 8 red rose flowers from her garden. How many
rose flowers did they pick altogether?

Ask: Who asked Jean and Grace to pick flowers? Who picked
rose flowers in the garden? What are they doing in the
garden? What color of roses did Mother ask Jean to
pick? How many did she pick? How about Grace, what
color of roses did she pick? How many red roses did
she pick? What are we looking for? How are we going
to solve this? How did you know that we are going to
add?
(Lead and show the pupils on how to add 7 and 8 using
order and zero properties of addition. Give other examples.)

Activity 2
Group the pupils into four. Give each group two sets of
objects. Let each group give the number sentence for each
and its sum.

C. Analysis
Ask: How did you find the activity? How many numbers did
you add? How many digits are there in each number/
addend? When you changed the order of the
numbers/
addends, did the sum change? How about when you
added the number to zero, what is the answer?

D. Abstraction
Ask: How do you add two 1-digit numbers with sums up to
18? What is an Order Property of Addition? What is a
Zero Property of Addition?

(Lead and guide the pupils in making the generalization.)


In adding two 1-digit numbers with sums up to 18 is by
using the order and zero properties of addition. Order
Property of Addition is when changing the order of the
numbers/ addends, the sum does not change. Zero Property
of Addition is when a number added to 0, the sum is the
number.
