LINE

Method suggested below is in reference of the Guidelines for Sediment and Erosion Control in
Malaysia (October,2010), with common practice of the major projects in Malaysia. Anyhow, it will
depend on the Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan (ESCP) submitted to local authorities. The
ESCP will details out all of the temporary measures that will be implemented during the earthworks
and construction phase, including the safe design and best management practice (BMP).
1) Temporary drainage line shall be divided to primary lines and secondary lines, where the
primary line is the outer side of the Project Site (far from crowded working area) and the
secondary line is the inside towards the center of the Project Site.
2) All of the temporary drainage system is constructed as an earth drain system, so it would
only involve with excavation and no major procurement of materials needed. All side of the
excavated slope shall not be greater that 1:1 to avoid collapse. Compaction might be
required.

Width to Depth Ratio shall be 1:1

3) The primary temporary drainage line could be excavated at permanent drainage line as to
minimize the frequency of scheduled maintenance of the temporary drainage line once the
permanent drainage started as well as shortened the time for excavation of the permanent
drainage line (some backfilling work with 95% FDT to the design level might be required).
4) In case of water flowing to work area of permanent drainage line, the area shall be blocked
and temporary rerouting/diversion might be required, if necessary.
5) If crossings are required, balance of pile cut offs (with estimated length of 2-2.5m) shall be
used instead of steel pipes to reduce unnecessary expenses.
6) Drainage outlet protection at the end of crossings and also outflow area of secondary
temporary drainage line into primary temporary drainage line shall be installed using
ripraps/aggregates to reduce the flow of water thus reducing the erosion of drainage
surface.
7) Woven-type (lower permeability than nonwoven-type) geotextile shall be installed around
sediment basin to reduce slope erosion that can cause unnecessary repetitive repair works.
8) Instead of silt fence (or sediment fence) around the sedimentation basin, due to Project Site
area is mostly flat, it is sufficient to make earth bund around the basin, to reduce the surface
run off from surrounding area during rainfall, but to ensure no flooding will occur at the area
(e.g.: small drainage outlet with drainage protection be made available into sediment basin
if the area found to be a flooding area, and etc.)
9) Check dam and silt trap to be made available before water flowing into the sediment basin
from the temporary drainage line.
10) Inspection of the temporary drainage line shall be inspected weekly by Environmental
Officer/Supervisor (in some projects, twice a week).
11) For maintenance purpose, there are two options as below,
a) Field instruction to Subcontractors for 2-3pax of manpower (with equipment – backhoe,
dump trucks, etc. if required) only when the maintenance is necessary.
b) Include maintenance of temporary drainage in the maintenance of work area by
Subcontractors in the related contract (all Subcontractors shall be involved) scheduled
monthly from each of them.
