Quarter 3 - Module 2
Basics of Photography
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests.
Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What is It

Basics of Photography
Concepts and Principles of Photography

Source: https://3g.co.uk/guides/best-camera-phones

Photography is capturing an image on film using light. It comes from the Greek
words that mean “drawing with light”. Photographs serve as scientific evidence, transfer of
news, historical documents, and works of art and records of family life.

The subject of the photo is the main character around which the image is created
which can be a person, group of people, an animal, or an area. Subject should tell a story
or conveys message to be interesting. Once you have a subject, focus your camera on it.

4
Principles to take note when taking pictures

1. Composition

a. Un-clutter the picture. Zoom in. Remove any destruction on your

subject. Get closer, zoom in and crop as tightly as possible.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

b. Rule of Thirds- The center of the frame is the weakest place- it’s
static, dull and gives no value to the context. The more you move
the subject away from the center, the more meaning you give.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

c. Use of frames, lines and diagonals- Create impact by using

frames and real or inferred lines that lead the viewer’s eye into and
around the picture.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

d. Dramatic perspective- Take photos from unexpected angles.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

5
2. Exposure

a. Aperture affects depth of field- When shooting a landscape; shoot

the photograph in sharp focus as possible and shallower in a portrait.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

b. Shutter speed- Absolutely sharp images are not always the best.
They can look static and dull. A slow shutter speeds of the camera
blurs the image of moving objects and can create more convincing
image of movement.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

3. Lens

Wide-angle lenses allow more of a picture to be captured (need focal

point) while telephoto lenses tighten the scene and isolate the
subject (but affect the depth of field and increase camera shake).

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

6
4. Light
a. Avoid using flash even for night shots- The indiscriminate blast of flash
destroys the intimate mood of existing light.
a.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

b. Side Lighting instead of front or

overhead (noon-time) lighting- The
use of frontal flash lighting tends to
flatten faces. Use side lighting as
much as possible, even moving your
subject, if necessary next to a
window.

Source:https://www.slideshare.net/hweeling/basic-photography-lesson

c. Use fill-in flash for backlit

situation or overhead sun-
Overhead sun creates dark eye
sockets and unattractive shadows
which can be reduced by using a
flash. Use fill-in flash also in
situations where the subject is in
backlit.

Common Parts and Functions of DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex camera)
and Built-in camera in your smart phones

Today’s digital technology makes it possible to take photographs without film.

These are known as digital cameras. There are complex and there are simple point
and shoot digital cameras. Most gadgets around can also be used for photography.
Computers, tablets, laptops and smart phones usually have built-in cameras.

Whether you are using the latest DSLR (Digital single-lens reflex camera), a
simple point-and-shoot, or built-in camera in your smart phones, they all have
`common parts that one should know about.

Lens – is the most vital part of the

camera. It focuses and directs
incoming light. It can be built
permanently or interchangeable.

Viewfinder – is a small window

in traditional cameras through
which you look with one eye to
focus on a picture but today’s
digital technology replaced it and
makes use of LCD screen. This
functions as the main visual-
source for image.

Shutter Release – the button
or mechanism that is pressed,
clicked or tapped to.

Image Sensor- converts the

optical image to an electronic
signal, larger sensors generally
are able to reproduce colors
more accurately.

images are stored, comes in
different size and speed
capacity.

is low or insufficient.

Tips in Taking Pictures

Experimenting is essential in photography when you are starting. Don’t worry about
rules for now. Do not make photography a hindrance to what you are doing. Make
photography a part of your life. Look for opportunities for taking photographs. You might
regret if you did not have your camera at hand when something random or momentum
happens. If you do not have a camera, try to borrow from a friend or a family member. The
built-in camera of a smartphone is a good substitute. Whether it is a DSLR or a built-in
camera, it will help you to do techniques if you know its features and what it can do. Read
manual and explore features by trying them out.
