WHAT IS FFA?
FFA is a dynamic growing youth organization, nearly half-a-
million student members strong, based in agricultural
science education. The National FFA is successfully
changing lives and preparing students for leadership,
personal growth and career success. These lessons, skills,
friendships and experiences shape our members and the
benefits remain for their entire lives. Members participate
in a wide range of agricultural science education
activities, leading to the possibility of more than 300
professional career opportunities. The continued success
of our student members remains the primary mission of
FFA.
OUR ODESSA FFA MISSION
The Odessa FFA chapter is dedicated to making a change in
the lives of its members through agricultural education
and FFA membership; this is achieved by demonstrating
good sportsmanship, promoting personal growth, building
leadership skills, to encourage others to reach outside
their comfort zone.
WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?
Any student in grades 9-12 who is enrolled in an
agriculture course at a public school is eligible to join FFA.

WHY AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE
EDUCATION and FFA?
Agricultural science education and FFA help students
discover their passion in life, develop their strengths,
introduce them to new experiences and achieve success.
The agricultural science education program is more than
"just a class" – it is an integrated approach to education.
This integrated approach provides students with academic
instruction, hands-on experience and the development of
critical life skills necessary for career success.
The academic instruction is similar to traditional classes
with the setting in the classroom, greenhouse, agriscience
laboratory, or other agriculture centers where students
learn from the agriculture teacher. However, unlike
traditional classes, the agricultural science classes are like
a beehive of activity with students discovering how much
fun learning can be by doing.
CHOOSE A PATHWAY!
Through the Agriculture and Natural Resources pathway,
we have three routes you can take in high school. All 9th
graders, if interested in Agriculture/Horticulture/Vet Med,
will need to take Principles of Agriculture at their home
campus. Once they have chosen their pathway they will
then proceed through one of the following pathways:
Animal Science
Veterinary Medicine
Horticulture/Floriculture
ANIMAL SCIENCE/VET MED
If you are an animal lover, you may find your place in an
Animal Systems career. Some who choose this career
pathway work directly with animals, others in this field
may inspect and grade livestock food products, purchase
livestock, or work in technical sales and marketing. Some
people in the animal systems career path work to develop,
more efficient ways of producing and processing meat,
poultry, eggs and dairy products. Others advise agriculture
producers on how to upgrade animal housing facilities,
lower mortality rates, handle waste matter or increase
production of animal products, such as milk and eggs. In
addition, careers for hunters and trappers are available,
which involve setting traps, tracking animals and securing
them through various methods. Alongside the Animal
Science Pathway, you have the opportunity to go the Vet.
Med. route in which you have the option to pursue a level
one Vet Tech certification.
HORTICULTURE/FLORICULTURE
If you have a green thumb, this career pathway may be
ideal for you. People who work in the Plant Systems
pathway study plants and their growth. Students learn to
operate a greenhouse, choose plants accordingly, and how
to install a proper landscape design, all while getting their
hands dirty in the production side of things within
Horticulture. Individuals in this pathway also have an
opportunity to become TSFA Floral Certified while
designing floral arrangements for local ECISD events.
