Assessment 3D Introducing Geometric Figures and Shapes
Whole Group Feely Box
PROCEDURES (with attention to differentiation and UDL)
WarmUp
1. Students will remain at seated at the carpet
2. Introduce Shape of the Day
1. Ask students to name the 2D
2. Take a volunteer or two to find a circle the shape with an expo marker
3. Discuss the 3D shapes with students
4. Take a volunteer to try and find a shape that looks like it and circle with an expo marker
3. Play the warmup song
1. Harry Kindergarten 3D Shape Song
2. Sing along with students
4. Pull up 3D Sphere shape song
1. 2D and 3D Shape Poems and Songs (Cube Song)
2. Sing to students twice, ask them to sing with you 2x after
5. Pullup the read aloud
1. Read: Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes
Activity Start by 8:55am
1. Students will remain on the carpet
2. We will be doing the same activity that we used with 2D shapes
3. Today, we are going to be using our hands to help us identify, or figure out shapes. In a few minutes, you will have the chance to work in
a group. Each group will be with a teacher, working with a tissue box and shapes. We will place a shape in the tissue box, and using only
your hand(s), you have to tell the group which shape is in the tissue. First, let us practice all together.
1. Feely Box
2. Model using 3 shapes cube, sphere, cylinder
Procedures 3. Describe to the class "I feel ____ points." "I think it has ____ faces." "It is round at the___."
4. Discuss thinking in your brain, what shape do you think it is? Raise a quiet hand.
1. "How do you know?"
2. Draw my description (shape) on the board for a visual if needed (points & sides & faces)
3. Review 3 Dimensional
4. Now, I want to give you the chance to try. Using the tissue box and shapes, try to describe and name the shape with your group.
Everyone will get a turn. When I call your name go to ____ (Ms. Mona, Mrs. Mertz, Miss Jentzsch).
1. Within the groups, pose questions that provoke shape names and attributes questions.
1. "How do you know it is a ____?" "What did you feel?"
2. Ring the bell Dismiss groups to freeze and quietly come back to the carpet.
5. Groups
1) Mrs. Mertz Cameron A., Khloe, Cameron M., Bella, Trenten, Brodee
2) Ms. Mona Jackson, Serenity, Lana, Lena, Colt, Briella
3) Ms. Jentzsch Chelsea, Tanner, Aubree, Allen, Krishiv, Kolton
Closing
1. Tell students to think about how the shapes felt Did one of the shapes have a point? Round? Flat?
2. Ask students to stand up
1. Use milk and cookie buddies
2. Give students about a minute
3. Return students to their spots
4. Share out whole group (2 friends)
5. ***Can be all whole group based on time***
6. Transition to centers
REFLECTION
Prior to the activity, I modeled the matching and sorting 3D real world objects with the shapes. I saw this helped the students to independently
work on the sorting activity. They were able to recognize the shape in the real life object more easily. I observed a few students who struggled
Reflection
to identify the shape in order to sort. Those students will be pulled in a small group for future activities. If I were to teach the lesson again, I
would have moved students to different tables to make numbers even when they rotated the shape mats.
