Heat Transfer Paper 2021
Heat Transfer Paper 2021
Note: Attempt any Four Questions. All questions carry equal marks
Q.1 20,160 lb/hr of a 30% K3PO4 solution, specific gravity at 120oF = 1.30, is to be cooled from
150 to 90oF using well water from 68 to 90oF. Pressure drops of 10 psi are allowed on both
streams and a total dirt factor of 0.002 is required.
Available for this service is a 10.02 inches ID 1-2 exchanger having 52 ¾ inches OD, 16
BWG tubes 16’ long laid out on 1-in. square pitch. The bundle is arranged for two passes,
and the baffles are spaced 2 in. a part. Find the pressure drop of shell side and tube side
Q2. 21,000 lb/hr of mixed n-pentane and i-pentane comes from a distilling column at 130oF and
25 psia and condenses completely at 125oF. The condensate is to be sub-cooled from 125 to
100oF for storage. Cooling will be effected by water 80 to 100oF. A shell side pressure
drop of 2.0 psi is permissible for the vapor and 10.0 psi for water. A minimum fouling
factor of 0.003 should be provided.
Available for the service is a 25 in. ID, vertical 1-2 condenser containing 370, ¾ in. OD, 16
BWG, 16’ tubes laid out on 1-in square pitch. Shell baffles are 12 in. apart, and the bundle
is arranged for four tube passes.
Will the condenser be a satisfactory vertical condenser sub-cooler?
Q4. A duct 4’ by 4’0’’ carries 100,000 lb/hr of air from a kiln drier at 250 oF. The gas is to be
used to preheat treated water from 150 to 190oF by revamping a section of the duct and
installing 1 in. OD 14 BWG tubes with 3/8 in. high annular brass fins of 20 BWG metal
spaced 1/8 in. apart. Assume the spacing for the tubes in on 2 ¼ in. triangular pitch.
How many tubes should be installed? How shall they be arranged.
Q5. A three stage evaporator is fed with 1.25 Kg/ sec of a liquor which is concentrated from 10
to 40% solids by mass. The heat transfer co-efficient may be taken as 3.1, 2.5 and 1.7 kW/
m2-K and the temperature distribution in three effect and the heat transfer area in each
effect? Each effect is being identical. The feed is at 294 K. Forward feed is used in each
case and the value of “U” may be considered the same for the two systems. The B. P in the
3rd effect is 325K and the liquor has no boiling point rise.
