VOLUME RESISTIVITY AND SURFACE RESISTIVITY

TEST SPECIMEN

The size of the test specimen(s) shall be 101.6mm +/- 3.2mm x 101.6mm +/- 3.2mm (4" x 4") x
thickness for laminate >0.508mm (>0.020 inch) or 50.8mm +/- 1.6mm x 50.8mm +/- 1.6mm (2"
x 2") x thickness for laminate <0.508mm (<0.020 inch). The quantity of test specimens shall be
six (6). This test is applicable to laminated base material.

REFERENCE

ASTM D 257

REQUIREMENT

When specimens are exposed to the environmental conditions and tested as specified, the
minimum volume resistivity and surface resistivity for each specimen shall be as specified on the
applicable material specification sheet.

METHOD

Determine the thickness of the test sample using the micrometer. Thickness readings should be
an average of three readings across the panel.

Chamber Cycle (Condition C Humidity) for laminates 0.4826mm (0.019") and thinner:

Place the three (3) specimens 50.8mm x 50.8mm (2" x 2") x thickness into a chamber for 96+2-0
hours at 35+/-2°C and 90+5-0% Relative Humidity.

Place a second three (3) specimens into a chamber and expose them to 48 +2-0 hours to 23 +/-
2°C, and 50 +/- 5% RH.

Measurements of volume and surface resistivity shall begin within a time tolerance of +2-0 hours
after the time detailed above for conditioning, and be completed within four hours. Using the
Hewlett Packard fixture, insert each specimen into the fixture which is connected to the
megohmmeter. Turn on the megohmmeter and adjust to 500 VDC. Close the clam shell fixture
and measure first the volume resistivity and then the surface resistivity. Allow the meter to
charge for sixty (60) seconds before making final reading. Read meter (megohms) and record
measurement.

VOLUME RESISTIVITY AND SURFACE RESISTIVITY

METHOD (continued)

Calculations:

Volume Resistivity (megohm-centimeters) = RA

T
Where:
R = Measured volume resistance in megohms.
A = Effective area of the guarded electrode in square centimeters.
T = Average thickness of specimen in centimeters.

Surface Resistivity (megohms) = RP

D4
Where:
R = Measured surface resistance in megohms.
P = Effective perimeter of the guarded electrode in centimeters.
D4 = Width of the test gap in centimeters.

RESULTS

The results of the testing of the applicable samples, when tested as specified above, are
submitted to the customer for its evaluation and disposition. See the attached test data sheet for
actual results.

ELECTRIC STRENGTH

TEST SPECIMEN

The size of the test specimen(s) shall be 101.6mm +/- 25.4mm x 101.6mm +/- 25.4mm (4.0" +/-
1.0” x 4.0" +/- 1.0”) x thickness. The quantity of test specimens shall be three (3). This test is
applicable to laminated base material < 0.508mm (<0.020 inch thickness).

REFERENCE

ASTM D 149

REQUIREMENT

When specimens are tested as specified, the average minimum electrical strength (perpendicular
to laminations) shall be as specified on the applicable material specification sheet.

METHOD

Preconditioning. The specimens shall be conditioned for 24 hours (+2 hours -0 hours) in lab
conditions maintained at 23°C +/-2°C and 50 +/-50 % RH.

Test Conditions. The test should be performed at ambient temperature, 23°C +/-5°C.

Equipment Set-up. Set the high voltage tester in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
so that the voltage range will be adequate for the material being tested. Set up the control for
testing using a 500-volt per second rate of rise. Attach the leads such that the high lead is con-
nected to one electrode and the ground lead is connected to the other electrode.

Test. Determine and record the thickness of the specimen at four places, 25.4mm (1") from the
edge at the midpoint of each side. Insert the specimen into the test fixture centering it to reduce
chances of flashover. Operate the tester such that the voltage is applied with 500 volts per
second increase. Observe the point at which the tester indicates a breakdown. Record the
breakdown voltage to the nearest 0.1 KV for values over 10 KV, and to at least the nearest 5%
for all lower values.

ELECTRIC STRENGTH

METHOD (continued)

Calculations. Calculate the average thickness for each specimen from the four individual values
measured. Determine the electrical strength in volts per mil for each specimen by dividing the
breakdown voltage expressed in kilovolts by the thickness expressed in inches.

Sample Calculation:
6.8 KV 1000 V 1 inch
ES = ----------- x --------- x ------------ = 1360 volts/mil
.005 inch KV 1000 mils

Determine the average electrical strength by averaging the individual values for each specimen.
Round the average to the nearest 10 volts/mil. If any specimen falls below the specification
minimum, calculate the percentage of the requirement as follows:

Lowest Value
ESmin = ----------------- x 100%
Spec Value

Report. Report the average value for electrical strength in volts per mil to the nearest 10 volts
per mil.

RESULTS

The results of the testing of the applicable samples, when tested as specified above, are
submitted to the customer for its evaluation and disposition. See the attached test data sheet for
actual results.

DIELECTRIC CONSTANT AND DISSIPATION FACTOR

TEST SPECIMEN

The size and quantity of test specimen(s) shall be three (3), 50.8mm x 50.8mm (2” x 2”), to
accommodate the material analyzer fixture, as applicable. For thin materials, the sample will be
stacked to equal a minimum of 0.381mm (0.015”) in thickness.

REFERENCE

ASTM D 150

REQUIREMENT

When the specimens are tested as specified, the dielectric constant and dissipation factor shall be
as specified on the applicable material specification sheet.

METHOD

Sample Preparation: Route three 50.8mm x 50.8mm (2.0” x 2.0”) square specimens from the
sample to be tested.

Test: Insert the Dielectric Constant/Dissipation Factor Diskette into the Hewlett Packard
Impedance Material Analyzer. Follow the user friendly instructions which appear on the
monitor, utilizing the OS standard, the 0 ohm standard, the 50 ohm standard, the HP 16453A
fixture and the Teflon standard in sequence as prompted on the monitor.

Using a micrometer, measure the specimen thickness in millimeters and record as "Ts", the
average thickness as nearly as possible to within +/- 0.0025mm. Place the specimen between,
and in close contact with, the 16453A electrodes with the specimen not touching the back wall of
the fixture. As prompted on the monitor, type in the thickness of the specimen. Allow the
analyzer to measure, and then record the mean value for dielectric constant and the mean value
for dissipation factor as indicated on the monitor. Remove the specimen from between the
16453A electrodes, and repeat these steps for each specimen tested.
The testing was performed at 1 MHz.

RESULTS

The results of the testing of the applicable samples, when tested as specified above, are
submitted to the customer for its evaluation and disposition. See the attached test data sheet for
actual results.
