Beat 1: (Enter Lomov) ………………Tchub:… This isn’t New Year’s!


Greetings between Lomov and Tchub.
Beat 2: Lomov: You see, it’s simply this……… I’ll take a drink of water first, dear Stepan
Stepanovich.”
Lomov is reluctant to tell why is he at Tchub’s place in a wedding dress.
Beat 3: He’s come to borrow money!...... won’t give him any.
Tchub assumes Lomov is here to borrow money again.
Beat 4: What is it then,……. Lomov: in a moment.
Lomov is still hesitating to tell the reason of his arrival.
Beat 5: Here it is then: ……. Tchub: (he goes out right,)
Lomov finally asks for Tchub’s daughter’s hand in marriage. Tchub gets way excited about this.
Beat 6: Lomov: I’m cold……. And so it is all night long.
Lomov talks to himself as he is worried about the proposal which shows his physical illness.
Beat 7: (Enter Natalia)…… Natalia: if I had waited.
Lomov and Natalia greet each other and seem to get along.
Beat 8: Natlia: But what on earth is this?....... Lomov: you’ll be angry.
Natalia is amazed to see Lomov in a wedding dress.
Beat 9: Lomov: but I-(aside) How fearfully cold it is!
Lomov talks to himself again.
Beat 10: Natalia: What is it?.......... Lomov: Yes, they belong to me.
Lomov reveals that the meadows belong to him which begins an argument between the two.
Beat 11: Natalia: Why, what nonsense!............... Natalia: You’ll pardon my saying so.
Natalia loses her mind as she believes the meadows belong to them. Lomov seems to explain
why it belonged to him.
Beat 12: Lomov: It is all a matter of record,……. Lomov: No, they belong to me.
The discussion turns into an argument as they drag their ancestors’ history.
Beat 13: Natalia: And if you keep it explaining it for two days……… to speak frankly—
Beat 14: Lomov: According to you I’m a usurper…………Lomov: Mine!
The argument turns into a heated brawl where they both curse each other.
Beat 15: Natalia: Really, you needn’t scream… Lomov: Me!
Natalia loses her mind when Lomov misbehaves. Lomov tries to explain why he behaves in this
manner.
Beat 16: (Tschubukov enters, right.)………….. Lomov: That isn’t a way a good neighbor
behaves.
Tschubukov becomes the part of the argument as well, however, Lomov and Tschubukov deal
with it in a respectful manner in the beginning. With time, the argument seems to turn into a
brawl.
Beat 17: Lomov: Stepan Stepanovich! You are no neighbour………. (Lomov staggers out,
center.)
The argument between them turns into a family insult verbal brawl.
Beat 18: Tchub: (angrily) The devil!...... Natalia: then has the cheek to argue about it.
Tchub and Natalia curse Lomov after he leaves.
Beat 19: Tchub: to make a proposal of marriage!........Natalia: Proposal for me?
Natalia is shocked to hear from Tchub that Lomov came here to propose her for marriage.
Beat 20: Natalia: Bring him back!......... Tchub: we’ve thrown him out!
Natalia wants Tchub to bring back Lomov as she is shocked to hear about his proposal.
Beat 21: Tchub: and you did it all, you!.......... Tchub: You forced me to it! You!
Tchub and Natalia blame each other for making Lomov leave.
Beat 22: (Lomov appears in the doorway) ……. Natalia: Enough, enough
Natalia apologizes to Lomov for misbehaving.
Beat 23: Natalia: (aside) I don’t know how to begin.
Natalia feels guilty for what she did earlier.
Beat 24: Natalia: Are you going hunting soon?....... Natalia: Otakatai is much better than
your Ugadi.
Natalia changes the topic to hunting which later seems to turn into an argument about their dogs.
Beat 25: Lomov: Really……Natalia: until you admit Otakatai is better!
They compared the breeds and abilities of their dogs in the argument.

Beat 26: (Enter Tchubukov) ….. Lomov: Palpitation.


Tchub becomes the part of the argument. However, Tchub and Lomov deal with it in a respectful
manner.
Beat 27: Natalia: What kind of hunter are you?....... Tchub: and what of it?
Lomov complains about his physical illness to which Tchub and Natalia questions him how is he
a hunter.
Beat 28: Tchub: Be still!……. Natalia: what’s the matter with him?
Lomov and Tchub starts to curse each other’s family.
Beat 29: Natalia: Ivan Vassiliyitch! He is dead!................... Lomov: Where am I?

Beat 30: Tchub: Get married!.........Tchub: champagne!


Tchub wanted his daughter to marry Lomov

Beat: Natalia: Oh, did you hear?........ Natalia: Papa paid eighty five roubles for his
