Listing of Parts Related Reports Available to Dealers
There are several recommended parts stocking lists and parts summary lists available
from Parts Distribution, which can help you, provide for a good product introduction and
adequate parts coverage. It is important to order the correct report to provide you the
most value.
Parts without attrition rates, or parts not projected to be replaced during the first ten
years of operation are shown in the 22,000-hour category. Parts without any
recommended quantities could be a MAO (make as ordered) part or a hardware item.
This report comes automatically with the PCL report.
8. (PCL) Interchangeability:
A list of all serviceable parts within the PCL in alphanumeric order that can be
interchanged among different machine models. Also, sometimes call a “Parts
Commonality” report. This report can show a percentage of common parts, if
requested, and lists specific parts that are interchangeable between the specified
models. Up to a maximum of 10 models can be requested on any one list. This list
must be ordered separately.
A. The first report consists of a list of hose part numbers extracted from the PCL for
all type of hoses.
B. The second report gives a complete breakdown of the hose information, seals
used etc., by hose assembly part number.
C. The third report gives the sum total of all hose lengths, stems and seals included
in the second report.
The 16H is a Product Link Considered Machine. The machine includes a 6-pin breakout
connector, but no pre-defined mounting location. The module can be installed by bolting
the module and shock mount to the radio mount plate on the inside right rear corner of
the cab post. The harness is accessible under the cab shift console. The standard
Installation Kit wire harness can be modified by adding a 6-pin connector to mate up with
the Product Link Ready connector. The antenna can be mounted on top of the cab, either
by using the magnetic mount antenna option, or bolting the stud mount antenna and
bracket to an existing bolt.
A Product Link mounting location is on the radio mount on the right rear cab post.
The Product Link Ready connector is on the right side of the machine, under the shift console.
The PL-201 module is recommended for the 16H machines. The PL-201 will transmit
Total Fuel from the engine ECM, as well as Event and Diagnostic codes from the
Transmission ECM, Engine ECM, and Cat Monitoring System.
The Product Link Ready is a first-run change for the 16H series. First run serial numbers
are included in the table below.
Product Link is a wireless communication system that allows for two-way information
flow between machine on-board systems and Caterpillar dealers/customers. The system
consists of three main components: 1) retrofit hardware (communication box, antenna,
and wiring), 2) satellite system and Caterpillar network, and 3) web-based software. The
web-based software is called the Caterpillar Product Link System (CPLS). It interfaces
with a web-based mapping package and the Caterpillar Dealer Business System (DBS) to
provide automatic machine location and hour updates. Dealerships can authorize
customer access to machines by setting up their customers with Dealer StoreFront and
Product Link accounts.
Orbcomm is the satellite service provider. Through their network of 35 low-earth orbit
(LEO) satellites and partnerships with various service distribution partners, Orbcomm
offers a potential worldwide communication solution. Product Link RF communication
operates in the very high frequency (VHF) portion of the frequency spectrum, between
137 and 150 MHz. Messages go from machine to satellite and are then transferred back
via a ground station to Orbcomm’s message control center. From the control center, the
messages are delivered via a direct line to Caterpillar headquarters and then disseminated
to the respective dealers.

An Operation and Maintenance Manual for Product Link is available with a list of all of
the components required to install the system. The OMM media number is SEBU7351. It
is available on SIS or it can be ordered through the media logistics system.
Product Link was developed as an enabler technology to help dealers honor their service
contracts and provide more timely PMs on their equipment fleets. Having machine hours
and location automatically updated in DBS allows dealers to better plan and schedule
their services. Moreover, wireless access to event/diagnostic information normally only
available via CAT ET can give dealers an early indicator if something is faulty on a
machine. Besides event/diagnostic information available on the CAT DataLink, Product
Link also allows for 4 additional ON/OFF type switches which can be used to monitor
other machine conditions.
A patent pending Product Watch function is also available which can trigger an alarm (e-
mail, pager, etc) if a machine operates outside of a configurable set of parameters. The
three product Watch functions are defined as:
1. Inclusive – User defines a known point and a radius around that location. If the
machine leaves that established area as determined by GPS, an alarm will be sent.
2. Exclusive – Opposite of Inclusive. Defines where an owner doesn’t want a machine
to be (i.e. Shipping port vicinity, chophouse, etc).
3. Time-Based – Allows user to establish a working window. If machine is operated
outside that window, it triggers an alarm.
The PL-151 and 201 modules and kits can be purchased through the standard Parts
Distribution system. The recommended kits are listed below, using the magnetic
antenna. The kit numbers are listed in the table below.
Product Link can help improve dealer efficiency and profitability by allowing more
timely PM scheduling and thereby increasing the residual value of the machines. It
eliminates the need to call customers or dispatch serviceman out to read meters. It
improves the customer perception of the dealer by allowing the dealer to provide
contracted maintenance proactively with a minimum demand on customer’s time. The
location feature can eliminate a lot of needless searching for machines. It can allow for
more efficient routing of PM trucks and also help identify unauthorized use of machines.
Product Link is not designed as a datalogger that can capture every thing that occurs on a
machine. The costs of such a wireless monitoring device would be very high. It will not
monitor payload, record trends, histograms, and other functions that are part of the Vital
Information Monitoring System (VIMS). It is designed to handle low volumes of
information for machines that are geographically dispersed like with a dealer rental fleet.
The Product Link team is ready to work with any dealer to answer any questions you
might have. Information is available on the Dealer Capabilities Department website
located at:
