STA108 - Group Projects (Guidelines)
STA108 - Group Projects (Guidelines)
Code : STA108
Course : Statistics and Probability
Level : Diploma
Credit Unit : 3
OBJECTIVES
1. To expose students to the application of statistical knowledge and tools toward secondary
data in group project 1.
2. To generate critical thinking using probability concepts and rules toward experiment in
group project 2.
3. To ensure that students gain good teamwork experience in doing both group projects.
OUTCOMES
1. Explain and analyze the actual data using appropriate statistical tools via Minitab software.
2. Relate the probability concepts and rules based on the given experiment.
SUGGESTED GUIDELINES
GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Students are required to form a group with 3 – 4 members. (the number of members per
group depends on the number of students in the class and the number of classes)
2. Cover page should include UiTM logo, report title, students’ name, students’ identification
number and registered group name.
5. Students are required to submit the hardcopy and softcopy (burn in CD).
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
1. Students are allowed to use secondary data in any science area. There is no restriction on
the size of the sample.
2. Student must use their knowledge and statistical skill gathered from Topic 1 to Topic 3, to
analyze data collected using Minitab.
3. Students must attach the Minitab output in the written report as an Appendix.
1. Students are required to apply the probability concepts and rules towards the experiment,
which will be given by their lecturer.
2. Students must use their knowledge and thinking skills gathered from Topic 4 and Topic 5
in order to conduct the experiment include the following elements.
Example:
Experiment
- A bag contains of eight balls which two balls are drawn one by one without replacement.
Suggested solution:
Students need to have creative thinking by allocating eight balls into two different colors; 3 red
and 5 blue, for example. Then, students may use tree diagram, for example to get the
probability distribution function of X or Y.

R 5/7
3/8 B RB
5/8 3/7 R BR
B 4/7
B BB
CONFIDENTIAL (For Lecturer Use)
CONFIDENTIAL 4
X 0 1 2
Y 0 1 2
Then, students have to use the knowledge gathered from Topic 4 and Topic 5.
Students may calculate the probability of at least the researcher will get at least one red ball.
Then, students also may calculate the expected value of X, E(X) or expected value of Y, E(Y),
and the variance of X, V(X) or variance of Y, V(Y).
From the answer obtained, students may use the properties of expected value and variance to
relate the value and the suitable properties.
