What Muhammad Bin Salman is doing now in Saudi Arabia was done by Ayub Khan in 1963 when

he appointed liberal reformer of Islam 'Fazlur Rehman Malik' as head of his newly founded Islamic
Research Center. Before that he was part of Jinnah's cabinet as interior and education minister.
He believed in liberalism, secularism, interest based system and neo modernism. He was strongly
opposed by Orthodoxy. Through him both wanted to prove that democracy, secularism and liberalism
are not anti Islamic. It was part of society's transformation process but it was abandoned when
mullahs and leftists grouped against Ayub regime to create their utopia.
Ayub himself did only one speech about Islam in his around 10 years of rule. It was done in 1959
where he talked about modernisation of religion. Later he called Ahadees "fables". He was a Quranist
and used to visit Dargahs quite a bit as he was also a follower of Sufism.
