Choice A is correct. The expression the absolute value of x minus 1, end
absolute value, minus 1 will equal 0 if the absolute value of x minus 1,
equals 1. This is true for x equals 2 and for x equals 0. For example,
substituting x equals 2 into the expression the absolute value of
x minus 1, end absolute value, minus 1 and simplifying the result yields
the absolute value of 2 minus 1, end absolute value,
minus 1, equals the absolute value of 1, end absolute value, minus 1, which equals
1 minus 1, which equals 0. Therefore, there is a value of x for which the
absolute value of x minus 1, end absolute value, minus 1, is equal to 0.

Choice B is incorrect. By definition, the absolute value of any expression is a


nonnegative number. Substituting any value for x into the expression the
absolute value of x plus 1 will yield a nonnegative number as the result. Because
