Position of Adverbs of Frequency (Frequency Adverbs / Frequency Words)

Frequency Adverbs (e.g. often, always, never, sometimes, generally, seldom, rarely, ever,
frequently etc.) usually go in the following positions:
a) Before the Main Verb
b) After the Verb "be" (am / is / are / was / were)
c) Between the Auxiliary (Helping) Verb and the Main Verb
d) Before "used to" and "have to"

Before the Main Verb


1) I often visit my parents.
2) He always buys comics.
3) They hardly ever visit u
4) I seldom read foreign newspapers.

After the Verb "be" (am / is / are / was / were)


(Subject + Verb "be" + Frequency Adverb + Complement)
1) He is always late for college.
2) I am often ready for work at 6 am.
3) He is never worried about his finances.
4) I am never asked to speak at public meetings.
5) They are never ready for compromise.

Between the Auxiliary (Helping) Verb and the Main (Principal) Verb
1) I have always thought of standing for election.
2) He has always done justice to all.
3) We shall never explore such opportunities.
4) He will hardly ever appreciate your kind gesture.
5) I have sometimes managed to hoodwink others.
6) It has rarely caught my attention.
7) They are seldom invited to parties.

"used to" and "have to" are always placed after the Frequency Adverbs.
1) The fire brigade always has to be ready for emergencies.
2) We sometimes used to go for long drives.
