1. This chart is comprised from the dates in the NIV Life Application Bible. It is difficult to pinpoint exact dates
for some kings because of co-regencies and kings whose reigns lasted only months or even days. Eugene H.
Merrill’s well researched Kingdom of Priests published in 1987 differs only slightly in with the dates given above.
2. (?) Denotes that there is some debate over these dates.

INTRODUCTION TO HOSEA
DATE: c. 753-715.
HISTORICAL SETTING: Israel was playing an international power game. For years they
had made and broken alliances with nations throughout the region. The nation was experiencing
a great deal of prosperity among the middle and upper classes. But their society was filled with
crime, immorality, justice and they mixed paganism with the worship of God.
OVERVIEW: The major theme of this book centers around the two aspects of God's nature that
are always present in His dealings with mankind; both His love and His judgment. God
compares His relationship with Israel as that of a husband and wife and compares their sinful
state to spiritual adultery. This is a common analogy used in OT prophecy (Isaiah 50:1; Ezekiel.
16:1-22; Jeremiah 3:1 (2-25).
ISRAEL'S HISTORY DURING HOSEA'S MINISTRY
752-732 Pekah 2 Kings 15:27 states that he reigned 2 Kings 15: 27-31
20 years, yet his reign in Samaria
is dated from the death of Pekahiah
in 740 to the reign of Hoshea in
732, which is only eight years. The
most plausible solution is that he
was in partial control of Israel
during Menahem's reign and was
co-regent from 752-740.
