Rain Water Harvesting & Ponds with Ground Water Recharge Structures:
Rain Water Harvesting in Pond:

Rainwater Harvesting Scheme:

Rain Water Harvesting Details for the period from January to December 2020 of Gare
Palma IV/5 Coal Mines
The water for harvesting in the GP IV/5 Coal Mines project area is the available rainfall
runoff generated from main surfaces in the project area i.e. roof top area, road/paved area,
green belt and open area. The Annual rainfall of mine area is 1662.2 mm (1.6622 mtr)
(source: Automatic Weather Monitoring Station at the Mine area). The runoff coefficient for
the roof top area which is 85%, Road/Paved area as 65% Green Belt area as 15% and Open
land/area as 20% (*Ref: Manual of Artificial Recharge of Ground Water, (CGWB,2007)) and
the runoff generated is quantified. Here, rainfall from January 20 to December 2020
considered for calculation of rain water harvesting of the GP IV/5 Coal Mines project area.

The details of various types of surfaces and quantity of runoff generated due to rainfall are
given below.

Rainwater Harvesting details in the project area (At Site Specification)-

Rain water Harvesting:
Considering 20% loss through 4 different areas, the total Quantum of available runoff
(cum/y) of the Mines is 2051021.824 m3/year.
As per the above mentioned details the rain water was collected through suitable RWH
structures and recharged it to ground water.

Implemented And Proposal Of Rainwater Harvesting Structure & Artificial Recharge:

The Industry is having maximum area under Green belt and open area for harvesting. On the
other side the continuous dewatering of water is gainfully utilized for all industrial purposes,
drinking, agriculture etc. Industry is operating underground mining activities. Industry has
already established Reservoir Pond at kondhel village for RWH measures and existing mine
pit under ownership which is being utilized as reservoir. Apart from that a check has also
been prepared as shown in photo. Industry is under process to develop additional check
dam over adjacent Nalas (Bendra and Dumer Nala).

The details of all the pits which are being utilized as rainwater harvesting reservoir are given
below:
Sr. Name of Mined out pit Length Width Depth Volume in
No. Cu.M.
1 Settling Pond 1 30 20 5 3000
2 Settling Pond 2 30 20 5 3000
3 Settling Pond 3 30 20 5 3000
4 Settling Pond 4 30 20 5 3000
5 Settling Pond 5 50 40 5 10000
6 Reservoir Pond at Kondkel 300 90 5 135000
Total 157000

The total capacity of existing reservoir pond & settling pond has capacity to hold and harvest
1,57,000 Cu.M of rainwater and seepage water. Further the available run-off of the project
area is 2051021.824 m3/year.

Additional mined out was recharge at the same place in shallow aquifers. water is being
utilized for various mining activities along with the dewatering of water is being passed
through well maintained 5 stage coal fines settling tank/pond. The water is then further
allowed to pass through Lamellae Clarifier after chemical dozing. The primary treated water
is channelized for irrigation purpose to connected villages. Apart from that part of water is
being treated through Reverse Osmosis procedure and prepared for drinking. The treatment
chart and all process photographs are attached in report.

Presently Industry is under operation of underground mining. Direct recharge proposal

may not be suitable as underground mining is progressing on different levels (Reduced
level) and hence percolation ponds are developed and slow percolation rate is being
maintained.

Additional recharge measures shall be taken where small recharge reservoirs shall be made
in dimension of 50 X 50 X 3.0 mts which can at least fulfil the basic requirement of village like
bathing, washing of utensils, bathing of animals etc. For establishing such recharge
structures, consent from individual land owners/ Gram Panchayat will be taken for
successful implementation, after selection of suitable land.
