Passive Multiplexers
and OADMs
More flexibility for less cost
Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

WDM NETWORKING, BASICS

Wavelength division multiplexing, WDM, has long been the technology of choice for transporting large amounts of data
between sites. It increases bandwidth by allowing different data streams to be sent simultaneously over a single optical
fiber network. In this way WDM maximizes the utilization of the fiber and helps optimize network investments.

The foundation of WDM lies in the ability to send different data types over
fiber networks in the form of light. By allowing different light channels, each
with a unique wavelength, to be sent simultaneously over an optical fiber
network a single virtual fiber network is created. Instead of using multiple
fibers for each and every service, a single fiber can be shared for several
services.

In this way WDM increases the bandwidth and maximizes the usefulness
of fiber. Fiber rental or purchase represents a significant share of
networking costs. So using an existing fiber to transport multiple traffic
channels can generate substantial savings.

CWDM and DWDM

WDM comes in two flavors: Coarse WDM (CWDM) and Dense WDM (DWDM).

The CWDM band can be divided into a low channel band (1271nm to 1451nm)
and a high channel band (1471nm to 1611nm). The wavelength grid is at
20nm separation as defined in the ITU-T standard G.694.2.

CWDM channels are carried on single-mode fibers where the lower

CWDM channel band faces a higher intrinsic attenuation and many older
fibers have also a high attenuation area (called “water-peak”) which together
will limit the bridgeable distance.

For longer distances or where the link attenuation is high, a CWDM solution could be limited to using the high CWDM
channel band where the intrinsic fiber attenuation is lower. It is thus important to measure the actual characteristics
(such as attenuation and chromatic dispersion) of the actual fiber link to determine how many CWDM channels that can
be deployed and what distance that can be bridged.

There are no cost-effective amplifiers that can span over the wide wavelength band of CWDM and consequently low
insertion losses of the CWDM filters are critical to bridge the required distances.

The DWDM band can be divided into many bands, but the most used is the
C-band (1530nm – 1565nm) where you have the lowest fiber attenuation and
where standard optical EDFA amplifiers can be used to extend the bridgeable distance.

Different channel grids are defined by ITU-T in recommendation G.692.1 and the
actual selection is based on a balance of e.g. cost, modulation techniques and
bit/baud rates.

A channel spacing of 100GHz is perhaps the most commonly used in the industry
since the cost profile of the involved components (optical transceivers, filters etc.) are lower as compared to e.g. 50GHz
components. High capacity links will however require denser channel grids or extend into the adjacent L-band (1565nm
– 1625nm) to provide additional channels.

Optical filters

Optical filters are the components used to multiplex and demultiplex the optical channels. There are two main types of
optical filters, Mux/Demux and Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM). The filters are typically passive devices and can
be placed in locations without electrical power. They are also vendor solution independent since no SW integration is
required. All together this provides an increased reliability as compared to active components.

A Mux/Demux unit terminates all the wavelengths on the WDM system and is typically used
as end nodes in a point to point or bus network or as head-end nodes in a ring network.

An OADM unit terminates a subset of wavelengths in a WDM network. OADM’s typically

add/drop 1, 2, or 4 wavelengths and the remaining wavelengths are expressed through
the filter. OADM filters are ideal for creating bus or ring networks or where only a few
channels are required at specific sites.

Fiber pair vs single fiber operation

Fiber-optical communication commonly uses fiber pairs for bi-directional communication. In WDM applications single-
fiber solutions are also possible and Smartoptics have developed a full range of CWDM and DWDM single fiber
Mux/Demux’es and OADM’s to accommodate these requirements. In single fiber applications, different wavelengths are
used to generate bi-directional connections.

Fiber-pair operation Single-fiber operation

1 fiber dedicated for receive direction 1 wavelength dedicated for receive direction

Knowing the system losses

Optical path loss calculation example:

The light is attenuated as it travels through the fiber, through

fiber splices, through patch panels and as it passed through the optical
Mux/Demuxes and OADM filters.

The total optical path loss must include all the above contributors.

The used transceiver has the following optical characteristics:

Transceiver launch power: 0 to +5dBm

Receiver sensitivity: -7 to -23dBm

The power budget for the transceiver is 12 – 23dB, i.e. an optical path loss
of minimum 12dB to avoid the receiver to be overloaded/damaged. The
max loss is 23dB to keep the input power above the receiver sensitivity.

An extra system margin of ~2dB should also normally be added to

compensate for fiber ageing and extra losses due to fiber splicing etc.

WIDE RANGE OF PASSIVE FILTERS

Smartoptics offers a wide range of passive filters for CWDM and DWDM applications in both fiber-pair as well as single-
fiber configurations. Two main product ranges are provided:
- T-/M- Series being high-end filters with focus on flexibility and performance.
- H-Series with focus on cost, compactness and extended temperature range.

The below table lists some characteristics of the two product lines.

T-/M-Series H-Series
Low loss Low cost
Flexibility, more variants High density
C-temp range I-temp range
50/100GHz DWDM 100GHz DWDM
Up to 40ch Mux/Demux units Up to 16ch Mux/Demux units
Single-fiber and fiber-pair config. Fiber-pair config.
1RU mounting 1RU mounting

The T-/M-Series filters are based on 1-RU rack-mounted units and plug-in modules that are mounted in a 1 RU, 2-slot
mounting bracket solution.

The H-Series filters are also mounted in a 1 RU mounting bracket solution, but the filter module sizes vary depending on
type of filter. The H-Series is a relatively new product line and additional filters will be added over time.

H-Series

T-/M- Series

The below figure shows a 16ch DWDM filter configuration from the M-Series and H-Series. The M-filter filter is a rack-
mounted 1RU device while the H-filter is a module that is mounted in the 1RU brackets.
As seen, the H-Series option occupies about 25% of the width as compared to the M-filter. The remaining space can be
used to insert additional filters.

The link loss for the H-Series configuration is 6.5dB (worst case) and the upgrade port will add on 4.8dB.
The M-filter has a link loss of 5.65dB and the upgrade port will add on 1.0dB.

The M-filter is thus better suited for future upgrades since the added loss through the upgrade port is far less than the
H-Series filter. The H-Series filter however, occupies less space and additional filters can be added within the same 1RU
slot.

The selection between T-/M-Series and H-Series is thus dependent on physical space requirements, upgrade needs,
optical performance etc. Please see tables below on optical performance and physical size data.
Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

H-SERIES
The H-Series currently consist of three CWDM
Mux/Demux units and four different DWDM Mux/DeMux
and OADM filter unit types.

The H-MD-C08 is a CWDM Mux/Demux covering the

lower CWDM band. Two wavelengths are skipped to
avoid the higher attenuation in the “water-peak” that is
present in legacy SM fiber types. The other two CWDM
filters operate in the high CWDM band.

The DWDM filters have monitor ports. These ports tap

off about 1% of the transmitted and received line signal.
This provides the ability to monitor the channel power
levels via a connected Optical Channel Monitoring
(OCM) device or an optical spectrum analyzer.

Almost all Mux/Demux units have an extension port

enabling additional Mux/Demux units to be connected
to provide an upgrade path to higher capacity.

The size of the filter units runs from 55 to 113mm in

width, depending on number of ports. Any combination
of filter modules can be mounted in the 422mm wide
slot of the mounting bracket.

See technical details below.

T-/M-SERIES CWDM FILTERS

Fiber-pair configurations:

The CWDM Mux/Demux units in the T-Series covers

both the low as well as the high CWDM band.
One difference vs H-Series is that the filters in the
low band are intended to more recent SM-fibers
not having the “water-peak”. There are consequently
no skipped wavelengths.

There are three different Mux/Demux’es for the high

CWDM band:

- T-3009 with a 1310-port

- T-3009M with a 1310-port and monitor port
- T-3008 with no extension/monitor ports

The 1310nm port is intended for legacy 1310nm

equipment. It can also be used to connect the low
CWDM band Mux/Demux’es T-3016 or T-3012 to
extend the number of channels.

Two Mux/Demux units are provided for the low CWDM

band:

- T-3016 for 8 channels

- T-3012 for 4 channels

Single-fiber configurations:

In a fiber-pair configuration the Mux/Demux units at the end

points are identical since the same wavelengths are used in
both directions for a connection. In a single-fiber configuration
two different wavelengths are used and consequently the two
Mux/Demux units are different, i.e. “mirrored”.
The two versions in the pair are denoted “A” and “B”.

There are two pairs of Mux/Demuxes for single-fiber operation.

- T-3209A and T-3209B enabling 9 bi-directions channels

- T-3204A and T-3204B enabling 4 bi-directions channels

In a single-fiber configuration there is no need to distinguish

between a transmit and receive line fiber. Patching will
consequently be easier.

Moving from a fiber-pair to a single-fiber configuration means that

each fiber in the pair now can be used as two independent
transmission medias.

All CWDM filters are plug-in modules of the same size. Two modules can be fitted in the 1RU mounting brackets
T-3002-19 for 19” mount, T-3002-21 for 21” mount or T-3002-23 for 23” mount.

See technical details in chapter below.

Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

T-/M-SERIES DWDM FILTERS

40ch DWDM filters for fiber-pair configurations:

The most commonly used DWDM grid is 100GHz.

The T-/M-Series has two such units providing 40ch DWDM channels:

- M-3840-M covering channels 921-960, plus a Monitor port.

- M-3840-LL a low-loss option without a Monitor port.

The monitor ports tap off about 1% of the transmitted and received line signal.
This provides the ability to monitor the channel power levels via a connected
Optical Channel Monitoring (OCM) device or an optical spectrum analyzer.

The number of DWDM channel can be doubled by using filters operating

at the 50GHz grid. The T-/M-Series has two such filters:

- M-5841-E covering the even 50GHz channels, plus an upgrade port.

- M-5840-O covering the odd 50GHz channels.

The figures show the supported DWDM channels.

By connecting the M-5840-O line signal to the Upgrade port of the M-5841-E
a full 80ch @ 50GHz configuration is provided.

See technical details in separate chapter below.

32ch & 16ch DWDM filters for fiber-pair configurations:

The T-/M-Series has a 32ch DWDM Mux/Demux

option as well as two 16ch options:

- M-3832-M a 32ch Mux/Demux with Monitor port

- M-3817-921936-M a 16ch Mux/Demux with Upgrade &
Monitor port.
- M-3817-943958-M a 16ch Mux/Demux with Upgrade &
Monitor port.

The two 16ch filters can be connected via the Upgrade port
to provide the full 32ch count, having the same DWDM
channels as the 32ch M-3832-M unit.

The figures show the supported DWDM channels.

All 40/32/16ch DWDM Mux/Demux filters are

1RU rack-mounted units.
Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

8ch DWDM filters for fiber-pair configurations:

The 8ch DWDM filters belong to the same “family” as the 32ch and 16ch
filters, i.e. they cover the same DWDM channels.

Each of the filters have an Expansion port and a Monitor port. The monitor
ports tap of about 1% of the transmitted and received line signal.
This provides the ability to monitor the channel power levels via a connected
Optical Channel Monitoring (OCM) device or an optical spectrum analyzer.

The Expansion port provides an upgrade path by connecting two or more

filters as shown in the example below.

The 8ch DWDM filters can optionally be used together with the 16ch filters as well in order to provide a more granular
upgrade in capacity.

The 8ch DWDM filters are plug-in modules of the same size. Two modules can be fitted in the 1RU mounting brackets
M-ADJ-19.

OADM DWDM filters for fiber-pair configurations:

The OADM-filters are provided in both 1-way as well as 2-way options. Each with 1ch, 2ch and 4ch add/drop
capabilities.

The 1ch add/drop filters are

provided in 32 wavelength
versions.

The 2ch add/drop filters are

provided in 16 wavelength
versions.

The 4ch add/drop filters are

provided in 8 wavelength
versions.

The covered channel range

matches the 32, 16 and 8ch
DWDM filters.

The 1-way filters have the extension “-LT”. Note that the add/drop is made to/from the Line 1 side.
The 2-way filters add/drop same channels in east and west direction.

The OADM filters are plug-in modules of the same size. Two modules can be fitted in the 1RU mounting brackets
M-ADJ-19.
Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

DWDM OADM filters for fiber-pair configurations with Booster/Pre-amp Access (BPA):

A special version of the 2-way, 4ch add/drop OADM filter has access to the add/drop channels before they are coupled
to the line. The intention with this filter is to enable insertion of a Booster and/or Pre-amplifier to compensate for fiber
and filter losses. The figure to the right shows an example where a Pre-amplifier is inserted.

Eight wavelength versions are provided. The OADM filters versions are plug-in modules of the same size. Two modules
can be fitted in the 1RU mounting brackets M-ADJ-19.

DWDM filters for singe-fiber configurations:

In a fiber-pair configuration the Mux/Demux units at the end

points are identical since the same wavelength is used in
both directions for a connection. In a single-fiber configuration
two different wavelengths are used and consequently the two
Mux/Demux units are different, i.e. “mirrored”.
The two versions in the pair are denoted “A” and “B”.

There are two pairs of DWDM Mux/Demuxes for single-fiber operation.

- T-3909A and T-3909B enabling 8 bi-directions channels between 921 – 939,

with an Upgrade port to enable 8 additional channels via T-3908A and T-3908B.
- T-3908A and T-3908B enabling 8 bi-directions channels between 941 – 959

In a single-fiber configuration there is no need to distinguish

between a transmit and receive line fiber. Patching will
consequently be easier. The complexity lies in that transceivers with different
wavelengths must be used at the respective ends.

T-/M-SERIES WIDE BAND 1310nm LEGACY & 1550 CWDM-BAND MUX/DEMUX

The T-3001 band filter is intended for cases where a legacy 1310nm channel is to be combined
with CWDM channels in the upper CWDM band (1460 nm - 1630 nm). The figure shows an example configuration
where this could be used.
Passive xWDM Networking Dec 2019

DWDM filters for 1531nm and 1551nm CWDM channels:

The T-3809 and T-3808 are DWDM Mux/Demux units having a channel plan
that allows them to be connected to a 1551nm port on a CWDM filter.

The T3809 MuxDeMux has an Upgrade port to which the T-3808 can be
connected, providing 8+8 DWDM channels to be carried over a CWDM link.

Further expansion can be provided via the T-3810 DWDM Mux/Demux,

having a channel plan that fits into the 1531nm CWDM window.

The figure below shows an example where these DWDM filters are connected
to the respective ports of the CWDM Mux/Demux T-3008. This configuration will
provide 6 CWDM channels and 26 DWDM channels sharing the same fiber link.
