Grading system

➢ 0% Attendance
➢ 10% Homework Assignments
➢ 15% Project Presentation
➢ 10% 1st Test 1
➢ 10% 2nd Test 2
➢ 5% Quizzes
➢ 50% Final Exam
Attendance

➢ Attendance will be checked during each lecture.

The only acceptable excuse for absence is the one
authorized by the Deanship of Student Affairs on
their prescribed form. This excused should be
presented to the instructor no later than one week
following the resumption of class attendance. For
any unexcused absence, 0.5 marks will be
deducted from the attendance grade. Any student
having more then 4 unexcused absences will
receive a grade of DN for the course.

Review of Vectors and Scalars
➢A Vector quantity has both magnitude and
direction

➢A Scalar quantity has magnitude only

➢ Scalars (e.g) ➢ Vectors (e.g.)
– distance – displacement
– speed – velocity
– mass
– acceleration
– temperature
– force
– pure numbers
– weight (force)
– time
– momentum
– pressure
– area, volume
– charge
– energy
Vectors
➢ Can be represented by an arrow (called
the “vector”)
➢ Length of the vector represents the
magnitude of the quantity
➢ Symbols for vectors:
⚫ (e.g. force) F ,or F (bold type)

Distance and Displacement
N River

My Place
X
3km
City
QUT
8 km

➢ 8km = Distance
➢ 3km = Displacement
➢ Distance ➢ Displacement
– total length of path – direct distance
travelled – shortest distance between
two points
– must be greater than (or
– distance between start and
equal to) magnitude of
finish points
displacement
– “as the crow flies”
– only equal if path is
– can describe with only one
straight
direction
– symbol d
– symbol s
– s = xfinal - xinitial
