Test 1, Math 211

Name:

DIRECTIONS

1. Follow all of the directions in each problem. Write neatly and clearly.

2. You may use any method from the class to solve the problems unless a problem calls for a
specific method.

3. If you use a formula/theoreom/property, state what formula it is OR that it is a prop-

erty/theorem of an object or operation.

4. Show all of your work. A correct answer with insufficient work will be counted wrong.

5. Clearly indicate your answer by putting a box around it.

6. Check that your test has 9 pages and 8 problems.

7. Calculators are NOT allowed on this exam, nor are cell phones or laptops.

8. Only methods learned in this course are acceptable.

9. Give all answers in exact form, not approximate form (that is, put π instead of 3.1415, 2
instead of 1.414, etc.) unless otherwise stated.

1
1. For the curve given by r(t) = ht3 , 23 t2 , 1i, find:

(a) The unit vector tangent to r(t).

(b) The equation of the line passing through the point (2, 2, 1) parallel to the tangent to the
curve at t = 2.

2
2. State whether each expression is meaningful. If yes, state whether it is a vector or a scalar.
Justify your answers.

(a) a × (b · c) + d
(b) a · (b · (c × d))
(c) a · (b × (c × d))
(d) (a (b · c)) × d
(e) (a × b) × (c × d)

3
3. Let u = h1, −1, 1i and v = h1, 2, 3i .

(a) Find a vector that is orthogonal to both u and v

(b) Find the area of the parallelogram determined by u and v

4
4. Given points P (4, −1, 2) and Q(1, 1, 5)

(a) Find an equation of the line passing through P and Q.

(b) Write the equation in parametric form.

(c) Find the point of intersection of the line above with the plane x + 2y − z = 4.

5
5. (a) Find the length of the curve r (t) = h3t, 4 cos t, 4 sin ti for 0 ≤ t ≤ 4

π
(b) Integrate r (t) = h3t, 4 cos t, 4 sin ti from a = 0 to b = 3

6
√ √
6. The curves r1 (t) =< 2 cos(πt), 2 sin(πt) > and r2 (t) =< 4t, 16t2 > intersect at (1,1) on
the xy-plane. At what angle do they meet?

7
7. Match each of the descriptions of the geometric objects with the corresponding equation.
Descriptions:

(a) Ellipsoid
(b) Line in the direction of < 3, −1, 2 >
(c) Plane containing the point (2,-1,1)
(d) Cylinder
(e) Cone

Equations:
π
• φ= 3
• x2 + 3y 2 + z 2 = 1
• r=3
• 3x − 2y + 1 = 9
• x = 3y = 2z

8
8. A building lot was initially built and measured at three points to be (0, 0, 0), (3,1,0) and
(0,1,0) that is a horizontal plane. A flagpole was constructed on the lot to be exactly vertical
to the lot. Years later the same three points were measured to be (0, 0, 0), (3,1,0) and (0,1,2).
What angle does the flag point now deviate from its original vertical position?
