Course Title: CARE OF CLIENTS WITH PROBLEMS IN NUTRITION AND GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM
DISORDERS (NSG 126)
Course Description: This course deals with the principles and techniques of nursing care management of sick clients across
lifespan in any setting with alterations/problems nutrition and gastrointestinal system. Students are expected
to utilize the nursing process in the care of individuals, families in community and hospital settings; ensure a
well-organized and accurate documentation system; relate with clients and their family and the members of
the healthcare team; observe bio-ethical concepts and principles, core values and nursing standards in the
care of clients; and promote personal and professional growth of self and others.
Introduction: The digestive system is composed of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract or the alimentary canal, salivary glands,
the liver, and the exocrine pancreas. The principal functions of the gastrointestinal tract are to digest and
absorb ingested nutrients and to excrete waste products of digestion. Most nutrients are ingested in a form
that is either too complex for absorption or insoluble and therefore indigestible or incapable of being
digested. Within the GI tract, much of these substances are solubilized and further degraded enzymatically
to simple molecules, sufficiently small in size and in a form that permits absorption across the mucosal
epithelium. This course describes the normal biochemical processes of intestinal secretion, digestion, and
absorption. Once these issues have been put in perspective, the course explores the pathogenesis of the
important gastrointestinal diseases and the biochemical basis for their diagnosis and treatment. This course
will explore on the different alterations in the digestive system and how these changes affect the human
organism. Through the teaching-learning process embedded in this course design, students are expected to
understand the theoretical concepts on nutrition and digestive system responses and be able to translate
them into nursing competencies to safely and holistically care for patients with specific GI system alterations
in all clinical settings.
Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, a group of learners will be able to utilize the nursing process in the care of
individuals, families in selected settings, assess with client/s his/her/their condition/health status, through
interview, physical examination, interpretation of laboratory findings, identify actual and potential nursing
diagnosis, plan appropriate nursing interventions with client/s and family for identified nursing diagnosis,
implement plan of care with client/s and family and evaluates the progress of his/her/their client’s condition
and outcomes of care. Furthermore, the group of learner will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of physical, social, natural, sciences and humanities in formulating appropriate nursing
care plans for clients with alteration in nutrition and digestive system response.
2. Utilizes the nursing process in managing patients with alteration in nutrition and digestive system
response.
4. Follow the guidelines in caring for patients with problems in nutrition and digestive system response
stipulated in the scope of nursing practice and adhering to the institutional policy.
5. Communicate effectively in establishing rapport with the patient, providing health teaching and nursing
interventions
7. Apply principles of coordination, partnership with other members of the health care team.
8. Manage the nursing service unit in medical-surgical area.
10. Participate in the research trainings, symposia, and variety of avenues for continuing education related
to nursing care for patients with alteration in nutrition and digestive system response.
11. Utilize techno-intelligent tools in providing nursing care to patients with alteration in nutrition and
digestive system response such as development in the respiratory care modalities, advancement in the
pharmacological and non-pharmacological approach in providing individualized plan of care.
12. Uphold the nursing core values in the delivery of care to patients with alteration in nutrition and digestive
system response.
