Debate Topics Innovation Enterprise and Society Session 2 2020
WEEK 4: TOPIC 4: “The substantial legal and financial sanctions characterizing the contemporary
system of intellectual property rights are defensible on economic (efficiency) and moral grounds.”
WEEK 6: TOPIC 6: “Mechanization (for example robotics) does not in itself reduce the need and
opportunities for waged workers.”
WEEK 8: TOPIC 8: “On balance, older, larger and more established corporations are more successful
at innovation than newer, smaller start-ups”.
WEEK 13: TOPIC 12: “A universal basic minimum income is the best policy response to the increasing
replacement of human labour with robots in advanced industrial economies.”
WEEK 14: TOPIC 14: This is not strictly speaking a debate. Each of the two groups is required to
choose an issue related to dilemmas in bioethics. You are to introduce the dilemma to the class and
frame a series of questions to put to the class about how this dilemma might be resolved. If you
cannot think of an issue – I have uploaded various kinds of source material under Week 14 in the
Learning Materials Section on VUWS.
