LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Weather Disturbances in the Philippines

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

A weather disturbance is a general term that describes any pulse of energy moving
through the atmosphere. They are typically mid or upper atmospheric troughs of low pressure
that are embedded in the general wind flow of the atmosphere.
They are important in that they can act as focusing mechanisms for storm formation, or
even to intensify low pressure systems.
Common occurrences in our country are flash floods and typhoons. During typhoons or
storms, especially when typhoon signals are announced, school children are advised not to go to
school and just stay home because streets may be flooded and objects blown by the wind are
dangerous.
They are also referred to as natural disasters, as they are capable of wreaking
infrastructures such as houses, buildings, roads, bridges as well as powerlines and agriculture.
