Overall comments:
I feel that sometimes students test what they can get away with from the teacher as one student kept asking
questions. The need of the teacher to feel safe I felt was being challenged by this student as this came
across as unpredictable and perhaps aggressive of him. The teacher remained calm and handled the
situation very well by talking in a calm manner and answered the student at every turn. After a couple of
times, the teacher asked the student to be patient and would talk to him after addressing the topic and giving
the rest of the class some work to do. I feel like, this worked very well as the teacher was able to still
maintain control of the class and not let the other student disturb the rest of the class. By telling the student
to hold on a minute, the teacher acknowledged the student and made sure that he was aware of this and
would attend to him as soon as the rest of the class was occupied. This takes skill and practice in my opinion
as the urge is to give in to the student as the fear is not to upset or make him more agitated more than he
already was. The teacher addressed the individual student and took the time to make sure that his emotional
and psychological needs were met according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Petty, 2015). In the future,
using such a technique as well as making sure that every student is attended to by acknowledging their
request and confirming that is vital in maintaining a safe environment. Sometimes all the student needs is to
hear the teacher’s voice or words of affirmation.
Good practice that I am going to use in my own teaching going forward:
