During the 1980s, wind power was ignored due to badly designed equipment, poor
long-term planning, economic projections, and the difficulty of finding a suitable
location for wind turbines.
Standardized manufacturing and purchasing of the wind turbines and their supporting
systems were the major steps in lowering the cost of wind power. Also, design
improvements, economies of scale, and more efficient maintenance programs for large
numbers of wind turbines have reduced operating costs too.
Wind power does not harm the environment entirely as compared to other sources of
electricity. It reduces air pollution, manages nuclear wastes, and minimizes global
warming. But wind energy causes many problems too like interfering with
telecommunications, affecting the wildlife and natural habitat.
The criticism that was prevailed in the US about wind power is that it was not
considered a significant energy resource. Besides, it was supposed very costly and
could not be supplied at a commercially competitive price.
The US does not pay the proper attention to the development of wind energy and
ignored it but Europe took it seriously, so the expertise and commercial exploitation in
the field has turned to Europe. Europe spends 10 times more on the research and
development of wind power than the US. About 10% of electricity in Europe is
supplied by wind power. In fact, the US lags from Washington, Denmark, Britain,
Spain, and the Netherlands in the establishment and capacity of wind turbines.
