Lab # 1
Identification of body Land marks and their measurement

Abstract:
In this experiment landmarks are called the body parts along with measurements are taken. Body
landmarks are identified with different body shape. There are different types of landmarks in the body for
example center line of the front, center line of back, low point shoulder, high point shoulder, literal land
mark of back etc. Then different body parts measure using anthropometry technique. The science of the
measurements of the size and proportions of the human body is called Anthropometry. The measurements
of the body parts include shoulder width, sleeve length, body length, back-waist length, back-neck-to-
cuff, cross-back, out seam and inseam burst waist waist high hip, hip, Upper torso includes center length,
full length, shoulder top, bust depth back length shoulder length, across shoulder across chest across back.
Lower torso includes high hip arc, hip arc, crouch depth, hip depth, side hip depth, waist to ankle, waist to
knee, waist to floor, crouch length. Special measurements include center front waist to floor, Centre back
waist to floor and center back neck point to floor. Result of this experiment include different
measurements of different body parts in inches.

Introduction:

Garments:
It is derived from the French word for "equipment," garment is a generic term we can use when the
specific kind of clothing we are describing is not the point. For example, a dress and pants. They are not
the same thing, unless we refer them to both as garments, in this case they are the same thing.[1]

Measurement of Garments:
For the preparation of apparel and a complete garment precise measurements must be needed. During
preparation of garments sometimes only base measurements are not enough. The buyer gives the
specification of measurement to get the actual size of each and every part of the garment. production time
and production cost also minimize due to measurements of garments. Garments measurement department
is present in every reputed garment manufacturing industry. They use some essential key points of
measurement to get a perfect pattern and get a perfect sample.[2]

Land marks in garment:

1. Chest/Bust - Measure around the fullest part of the chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too
tightly.

2. Center Back Neck–to-Wrist- With arm straight, measure from back base of neck, across
shoulder, and along arm to wrist.

3. Back Waist Length- Measure from the most prominent bone at base of neck to the
natural waistline.

4. Cross Back- Measure from shoulder to shoulder.

5. Arm Length- With arm slightly bent, measure from armpit to wrist.

6. Upper Arm- Measure around the widest section of the upper arm located above the
elbow.

7. Armhole Depth- Measure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit.

8. Waist- Measure your waist at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually
just above the belly button.

9. Hip- Measure at the widest part of your lower hip.[3]

French Curve:

Figure 2

These are plastic (or wooden) instrument having an edge consist of several different curves.
Smooth curves of almost any desired curvature in mechanical drawings can be draw with the
help of French curve in drafting (or were before computer-aided design). Three typical French
curves are shown above.[4]

Japanese Scale:

This scale is helpful in finding the precise measurements of curves and straight lines and draw
line at 90o.

Figure 3

Measuring tape:
A long, thin piece of plastic, cloth, or metal that is marked with units of length (such as inches or
centimeters) and that is used for measuring things.

Background and Key Concepts:

Anthropometry (from Greek ἄνθρωπος anthropos, 'human', and μέτρον metron, 'measure') defines the
measurement of the human individual. An early tool of physical anthropology, human physical variation
and to correlate physical with racial and psychological traits can be identify with this method, for the
purposes of understanding, it involves the systematic measurement of the physical properties of the
human body, primarily dimensional descriptors of body size and shape [5]

Experimental:
Materials:
 Measuring tape
 Mannequin

Procedure:
 Measuring tape was taken
 Measurements of different landmark was taken which include bust, waist, high hip, hip
 Upper torso measurements was taken which include center length, full length, shoulder slope,
bust depth, side length, back neck, shoulder length, across shoulder, across chest, across back,
waist arc
 Lower torso measurements was taken which include High hip arc, Crotch depth, Hip depth, Side
hip depth, Waist to ankle, Waist to knee, Waist to floor, Crotch length, Total torso, Upper thigh,
Mid thigh, Knee, Calf, Ankle
 In last special information was measured which include center front waist to floor, center back
waist to floor, center back neck to floor

Conclusion:
Anthropometric measurements are taken which identify different landmarks of the body. It gives
us information about the measurements of different body parts for stitching perfect garments
fabric.
