WRITING WITH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT LENSE ASYNCHRONOUS

STANDARD: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely
linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to
what happened.

Total Time: 10-15 minutes


Goal: Have students use their writing skills and be able to draw a picture that goes along with
their writing. This writing assignment can be used to write notes to healthcare workers, cancer
patients, elderly people, homeless individuals, and any group of people in the community that is
in need. For this asynchronous lesson, I will be sending images students create to Front Line
Workers at UIC Medicine in Chicago via Instagram and including a hashtag.
INTRO:

We all enjoy getting letters and messages in the mail, don’t we? During these times, where we
might not be able show our appreciation directly, we are going to be sending thanks to all of
those who are fighting for our lives and helping those who are ill.
PROCEDURE:
1. Explain that students must write 2 to three sentences and draw/ design an image to go
along with it.
2. Before beginning, have students brainstorm on Jamboard why they are thankful
3. Show students how they can use Piktochart or send in creations of their own
4. Students must download image/ upload image of work to google classroom drop box.
5. I will proofread/ check for appropriateness, and post to social media.
6. Students must submit at least 2 different messages; more is greatly appreciated!

DIRECTIONS
1. Watch video from UIC in Chicago.
2. Go to Jam board and brainstorm why you are thankful for the essential workers or get
inspiration from peers.
3. Come up with TWO complete sentences with proper grammar and punctuation that
explain why you are thankful for the essential workers.
4. Make a graphic! Use Piktochart or draw a picture on your own. Make sure to incorporate
your sentences and make the picture relevant to your sentences.
5. Turn in on Google classroom.
