Introduction of PTCL

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is the country's major


telecommunications company. PTCL offers telephonic services to the country and serves as the
country's telecommunications infrastructure's backbone. The firm operates around 2000
telephone exchanges in Pakistan. They have the most extensive fixed line (land-line) network,
with 4.8 million fixed-line clients. PTCL also provides GSM, CDMA, and Internet services. In
2006, the government of Pakistan sold 26 percent of the business's ownership and control to
Etisalat (the telecom corporation of the United Arab Emirates). The government of Pakistan
retains 62 percent of the shares, while the general public owns the remaining 12 percent.
Wireless is another service offered by PTCL. The government of Pakistan kept 62 percent of

wireless telephony network known as 'Vfone,' which has 1.25 million active consumers. Apart
from operating as a fixed landline network in Pakistan PTCL also offers products and services
such as high-speed broadband Internet, wireless Internet, smart TV (IPTV) services, Smart Link
App, Smart TV App, and other OTT apps. Touch App, as well as world-class digital
entertainment from Netflix, and Enterprise-level platforms from PTCL, such as Smart Cloud,
Tier-3 certified data centers, managed services, and satellite services, are satisfying companies'
connectivity demands and helping them to function more effectively. PTCL has the potential to
be a significant economic growth driver in Pakistan. It has installed Optical Fiber Access
Network technology in Pakistan's main urban areas. Connecting Pakistan to the world. Its

History Of PTCL:

Posts and Telegraph department was introduced in 1949 where as Telegraph and telephone
department was introduced in 1962. PTCL has been playing a key role in Pakistan's
telecommunications industry. PTCL was privatized in 1991 and in 1994 the government
distributed six million vouchers convertible into 600 million shares of the proposed PTCL in two
separate placements. In 1995 about 5%of PTC assets were transferred to PTA , FAB and NTC.
In 1996 PTCL was formed and listed on all stock exchanges of Pakistan. In 2001, PTCL
established its mobile and data services subsidiaries, Ufone and PakNet, respectively. None of
the brands finished first in their respective competitions. Ufone, on the other hand, has recently
grown its market share in the cellular industry. Over time, the PakNet brand basically
disintegrated. In 2003 the telecom deregulation policy was announced. In 2005, the
government agreed to sell 26 percent of the firm to a private entity. There were three bidders in
the PTCL privatization auction process. Etisalat, an Abu Dhabi-based corporation, was able to
secure the shares with a significant margin in the auction. . As of 2019, Etisalat had withheld
$800 million due to a property-transfer dispute with the Pakistani government.

manufacturing/service industry.
 To Increase the long-term advantages to the government's financial condition through
broadening the taxable revenue base.
 To motivate healthy competition among service providers while preserving telecom
leadership.
 Retain consistency with the Pakistan IT and Internet promotion strategy of cutting costs
and Internet access.
