Air conditioning system Safety precautions for working with refrigerant

When working with refrigerant, always follow the safety rules.
1. Do not operate the refrigerant indoors or near open flames.
2. Always wear safety glasses.
3. Keep refrigerant out of the eyes or on the skin. In case of defeat:
a) Do not rub the rim.
b) Rinse the rim with plenty of cold water and brush the skin with a clean vaseline.
c) Do not attempt to treat yourself; immediately contact a medical institution.
4. Before removing or checking electrical parts, set the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position
and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
5. Do not heat refrigerant cylinders or burn them.
6. Do not drop cylinders or expose them to blows.
7. Do not operate the compressor without sufficient refrigerant. The lack of refrigerant leads to
insufficient lubrication of the compressor, which can lead to its breakdown.
8. Do not open the high-pressure valve on the pressure gauge block while the compressor is
running. When the high-pressure valve is open, the direction of the refrigerant flow changes,
causing the cylinder to break.
9. Do not overcharge the system. Excess refrigerant leads to insufficient cooling, over-
consumption of fuel, engine overheating and so on.

Using a block of pressure gauges

Installation of the pressure gauge block and discharge of the system
1. Install the adapters on the charging hoses.
2. Remove the plug from the service valves of the line of the air-conditioning system.
3. Install the pressure gauge unit.
a) Close both valves of the pressure gauge block.
b) Connect the pressure gauge hoses to the service valves.
PIC 1
c) Open both valves of the pressure gauge block.
d) Press the valve core located on the side of the manometer unit and release the refrigerant of
the air conditioning system.

Note: below are the diagrams of the installation of a manometer unit for vehicles with different
engines and the connection points of the manometer hoses to the service valves.

PIC 2

Vacuuming the system

1. Vacuum the system,

a) Install the adapter on the vacuum pump.

PIC 5

b) Connect the central hose of the manometer unit to the vacuum pump adapter.

c) Open both valves of the pressure gauge block and turn on the vacuum pump.

PIC 6
d) At least 10 minutes later, check that the low pressure gauge shows 100 kPa or more.

Note: if the pressure is lower, close both valves of the pressure gauge block and turn off the
vacuum pump. Check the system for leaks and repair if necessary.
e) Close both valves of the pressure gauge block and turn off the vacuum pump.
f) Leave the system in this condition for at least 5 minutes, check that the instrument readings
do not change.

Charging the system

1. Install the charging cylinder. Note: When working with a charging cylinder, always follow the
requirements described in the instructions to it.
a) Fill the charging cylinder with the required amount of refrigerant.
Required refrigerant amount 700 ± 50 g.
b) Connect the central hose to the charging cylinder.
Caution: do not open the valves on the gauge block!
c) Open the valve on the charging balloon.
d) Push the valve core, located on the side of the block of manometers, and release the air from
the central hose.

Checking the tightness of the system

1. Check the system for leaks.
a) Open the high-pressure valve on the pressure gauge block and charge the system with
refrigerant.
b) When the pressure in the side of the pressure reaches 98 kPa, close the high-pressure valve.
c) Check the leak detector for leaks.
d) If leaks are found, after the repair, repeat the procedure of vacuuming.

Refrigerant refueling
1. Refill the system with refrigerant. After checking for leaks, bring the amount of refrigerant to
normal.

Attention:
• Never charge the system through the high-pressure side while the engine is running.
• Do not open the low pressure valve when the system is charged with liquid refrigerant.
a) Open the high pressure valve of the pressure gauge block completely.
b) Fully charge the system, then close the high-pressure valve.
Note: the sign of a fully charged system is the absence of bubbles in the service window.
Removing the Manometer Unit

1. Disconnect the manometer unit from the service valves.

Note: First close the valves of the pressure gauge block.
2. Install the plugs on the service valves of the cooling system.

Checking the amount of refrigerant

b) Open the doors completely.
2. Air conditioner mode.
a) Install a high speed fan heater.
b) Turn on the air conditioner.
c) Move the air intake damper to the "RECIRC" position.
d) Set the maximum cooling mode.
3. Check the quantity of refrigerant in the service window of the receiver.
a) If bubbles are visible in the service window (lack of refrigerant), then check for leaks in the
system and refuel the system to normal.
Note: refer to "Charging the system" for the amount of refrigerant.
b) If the bubbles are not visible {the amount of refrigerant is normal, or the system is recharging,
or there is no refrigerant), then take a look at subparagraphs "c" and "d".
c) If there is no temperature difference between the compressor inlet and outlet (there is no
refrigerant or the amount of refrigerant is minimal), check the refrigerant leaks, then charge the
system to normal.
d) If there is a large temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor {the
amount of refrigerant is normal or the system is recharging), then see subparagraphs "d" and
"e" for the elimination method.
e) If the refrigerant in the service window becomes transparent immediately after turning on the
air conditioner (recharging the system), then evacuate and top up the system.
f) If the refrigerant foams after switching on the air conditioner and then becomes transparent,
the amount of refrigerant is normal.
