MATCH THE DIAGRAM

Match each diagram with the type of unconformity it shows. Write the letter of the matching diagram in
the space provided. Then describe each unconformity and how it is formed.

B 1. Nonconformity - is used for unconformities at which strata were deposited on a basement of older
crystalline rocks.

C 2. Angular Unconformity - At an angular unconformity, strata below the unconformity have a different
attitude than strata above the unconformity

A 3. Horizontal unconformity - An angular unconformity is an unconformity where horizontally parallel

strata of sedimentary rock are deposited on tilted and eroded layers, producing an angular discordance
with the overlying horizontal layers.

Vocabulary Words

1. Absolute - Use absolute as a noun or an adjective when you're so sure of something that you know it
will never change. ... Absolute can also mean "without any doubt," as in the case of an absolute beauty
— such as a glamorous movie star or a supermodel — or "without limits," such as a dictator who has
absolute power over the people.

2. Radioactive Decay - Radioactive decay is the spontaneous breakdown of an atomic nucleus resulting
in the release of energy and matter from the nucleus. Remember that a radioisotope has unstable nuclei
that does not have enough binding energy to hold the nucleus together.

3. Radiometric dating - Radiometric dating, radioactive dating or radioisotope dating is a technique

which is used to date materials such as rocks or carbon, in which trace radioactive impurities were
selectively incorporated when they were formed.

4. Half – life - The definition of elimination half-life is the length of time required for the concentration of
a particular substance (typically a drug) to decrease to half of its starting dose in the body.

5. Uniformitarianism - the theory that changes in the earth's crust during geological history have
resulted from the action of continuous and uniform processes.
