QUESTION 01

1.1 A whole class discussion is based on one concept or goal; it is also part of a larger
conversation that takes place over time. When students see connections within a
lesson and across lessons, they develop deeper mathematical concepts. Classroom
discussion is also a practice in which the instructor and students share views on a
specific topic previously lectured. Promoting and facilitating classroom discussions can
not only help students learn from one another but also help students understand and
retain the lecture better. Group work can greatly enhance contributions made by
individual members and create learning connections between class members in
addition to the traditional instructor-student relationship. Successful group work
requires pre-planning to address issues of group formation and dynamics, evaluation of
individual and group performance, peer feedback, and availability of an instructor for
meaningful and sufficient feedback. However, the opposite can lead to unsuccessful
classroom discussions. To be more precise here are a few examples of unsuccessful
discussions.
 Lack of general guidance
 Long written work
 Groups formed spontaneously
 Unequal distribution of work load within peers.

1.2 learners who participate in guided classroom discussion discussions learn essential life
skills as well, including the importance of active listening, by creating an atmosphere of
understanding and encouraging students to listen with the goal of understanding, we can
improve their communication skills. Its importance is vast as it helps students’ process
information rather than simply receive it. However, leading a discussion requires skills different
from lecturing, discussions increase students’ interests and engagement-lectures mixed with
discussions can help maintain students’ focus. As discuss their answers, they get different
perspectives on the topic. Good questions and answers can get students to think deeply and
make connections. Overall, discussion is important as a way of testing and exploring new ideas.

1.3 group guided learning entails grouping learners accordingly to discuss an issue and guiding
them during this period. In the cartoon the teacher’s shortfall was that she failed to choose a
text that inspires learners, good questions were not posed, and the instructor did not lecture
for a certain amount of time to give insight in the topic. Both students and lecturer did not
share views on the topic that was supposed to be lectured. The teacher failed to promote and
facilitate learning, learners are left to chit chat amongst themselves about unrelated issues.

Overall, the teacher left everything to the students. Students are not taking responsibility for
their learning, resulting to an unsuccessful classroom discussion.

1.4 in making class discussions work, as a teacher I would group the learners accordingly to
their needs making sure that each group has at least one learner who is bilingual so as to assist
learners who find language of medium difficult.

 Increase students’ interest and engagement- give different perspectives on the topic,
pose good questions to get them to think
 Use feedback to see whether student understands material, if student answers
incorrectly I can help and guide them to the right answer.
 Regularly engage students in discussions, so their more likely prepared in class and can
ask questions or get clarity.
 Control the classroom environment, should a student not pay attention I can call upon
them to focus, this will enhance attentiveness and make students responsible for their
learning.
 Add interpretation-the language of learning and teaching can be difficult for some
learners. The use of pictures and checking pre-knowledge from learners in their
different cultures is key to getting them to engage and participate effectively

Overall, being a motivated teacher can inspire and motivate learners in their discussion.

QUESTION 02

A class with diverse learners means that as a teacher I need to plan accordingly showing sensitivity to
the needs of each learner as an individual. My teaching methods should embrace and show recognition
of diversity. Therefore it is important engage all learning styles in every lesson. The following styles are
what I would implement to my classroom

 Kinesthetic learners- give students a hands on experience by using concrete material to enable
them to touch and move around in the classroom. provide Letter blocks during story time and
have the students spell out certain certain word throughout the story for a fully tactile
experience. Going on field trips can also be part of my teaching, involve learners in interactive
lessons and activities will engage the tactile learners and allow them to use their senses.

 Auditory learners- some of my students may learn best when they are able to hear me explain
an idea or concept. When they hear information from me, classmates or even own mouths their
able to process it more quickly. Class reading and discussions can be a great way to make sure
my auditory learners comprehend the material. The use of videos and verbal repetition are also
another way to incorporate auditory learning methods in my class.

 Visual learners- students who learn visually have to see it to understand it. The use of images as
a representative of abstract objects can help students visualize the concept given to them. For a
visual learning experience, I may use video clips and demonstrations. Writing out information or
instructions on the board may may help visual learners retain important facts. The use of vibrant
and vivid colors to draw their attention is also very important. Lastly to encourage them to draw
and and use symbols will help them feel confident about their differences.

 Reading and writing learners- similar to visual learners, students who learn through reading and
writing, benefit from traditional note taking and textbook reading. Worksheets and drawings are
ideal for these learners. Having students write on the board or make a list together as a class is a
great way to ensure that your reading and writing learners are getting the information they
need.

These teaching methods are great as this will show learners that I care deeply about their
performance. Each learner counts and going an extra mile to accommodate each learner can
lead to the success I require of them.
