MF013 General Physics Ⅱ Online Assignment Jan – Apr 2020

Question 1
Magnetic field has a wide range of applications around us.
State three examples of devices, equipment, instruments, machines or system that need magnetic field to
operate. What are the functions of the examples that you mention? (What are they used for?)
Lastly, briefly explain the working principle of magnetic field in these applications.

Question 2
As shown in Figure Q2 below, two audio speakers s1 and s2 are set up in a large outdoor open area for an
event. As one of the event’s organizing committees, you are in charge for the sound system.
In order to test the sound system, you play some music through the sound system.

Let’s say sound wave of wavelength out from s1 takes 5λ to reach point X while s2 takes 4.5λ to do so. In
front of these two speakers there is nothing to block the sound wave.
Now you are at point X, will you hear the music that is playing? Explain your answer with your
understanding on superposition of waves. Do you think the sound system set up need to make any
improvements? If yes, then what is your suggestion?
[8 marks]

Question 3
(a) Give two examples of device, instrument or phenomena that involved standing waves (stationary
waves). Briefly explain what sort of wave are used and how they formed standing waves.
[6 marks]

(b) Provide two applications of polarizer and explained their function in these applications.
