SUBSEA UTILITY BOARD WATER MONITOR CIRCUIT

SCOPE
This Engineering Bulletin addresses a
possible incorrect value resistor in the water
monitor circuit of the Subsea Utility board
(Hydril PN AA5160000800)
BACKGROUND
The typical water monitor circuit on the
Subsea Utility board consists of a pull-up
Figure 1
resistor which also acts as a voltage divider.
Typical Water Monitor Circuitry
This resistor value determines the amount
of resistance across the water monitor leads
that would be required to pull-down the
voltage to a logic Low level. The three
water monitor pull-up resistors are R41, R42
and R46. These values should be 499
KOhms. Figure 1 shows a typical water
monitor circuit from the Subsea Utility
Board. Figure 2 shows the assembly detail
of the water monitor circuits with the pull-up
resistors identified (Note that these are the
incorrect value of 499 Ohms). An
undersized resistor value alters the water
monitoring circuit such that a valid water
ingress situation may not be properly
detected and alarmed. Figure 2

RESULTS
Correct resistor values are required for
proper operation. The surface mount
resistor designations should be 4993,
indicating a 499 KOhm resistor. Any other
value should be deemed incorrect.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCLUSION

With the correct resistor values installed at Verification of the above mentioned
R41, R42, and R46, the water monitoring resistors is suggested when the SEM is
circuit performs properly and water ingress available for maintenance. If the incorrect
is detected as designed. These water value is installed, the board should be
monitor circuit values will also provide the returned to Hydril Co. for replacement
ability to detect impurities in the associated
solenoid housing DC200 fluid. If a water
ingress alarm is generated as a result of
powering off one of the SEM’s and the
alarm is cleared by simply powering the
SEM back on, this is an indication of
impurities in the DC200 that affect the
conductivity of the fluid. These impurities
could include, but are not limited to, such
things as metal shavings, water, etc. It is
recommended that when this occurs plans
should be considered for the DC200 fluid to
be replaced.
