CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. BACKGROUND PROBLEM


As times goes with the rapid transformation of technology, there are a lot of jobs
that has been wiped out but also a lot of new one that has been created. One of the way to
create new job opportunities is by taking the chances to be an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurship is a person's desire to start a new business and their willingness to work
for themselves. It is very important to develop entrepreneurship for young people,
especially students. They must be prepared not only to become workers but also to
become entrepreneurs so that they can open job opportunities for the others. There are
several ways from government, schools, colleges and related parties in effort to build
student’s entrepreneurship, one of that way is by providing entrepreneurship lessons in
the curriculum.
As it obtained by business administration students of Jakarta State Polytechnic,
there are some courses which led them to start a business, one of those is called Selling
Administration (Selling). This course require students to make a group consist of 2 – 3
person to work together and do a real-life selling practice at the annual event called
ANEXPO. Usually this event is implemented directly on campus, but due to the
pandemic situation, it has to be done virtually (online). Through this events, the students
are expected to start their own business so it could develop their entrepreneurship. But
other than that, they’re allowed to sell products from the existing brands.
This event could give students the experience about many things such as starting
new business from zero, cooperation with other parties, improving marketing and
negotiation skills, etc. If they can take this opportunity well, it is not impossible to grow
their business to be large and successful in the future.

1.2. BUSINESS DESCRIPTION


1.2.1. Business Profile
According to the background problem above, our team finds out that this time is
the right chance to gain new experiences by starting our own business. We saw that there
is an opportunity from the high public interest in sweet food especially dessert box
nowadays, so that we decided to start a culinary business with dessert box as our
signature product. Our business detail is on the table below.

The founder of Desserteur consists of 3 people which are every members divided
into different responsibilities in running the business activities. The team structure detail

1.2.3. Vision & Mission


The vision and mission statements are important because it define the purposes of
our business and also it helps to motivate Desserteur team in achieving our goals.
Therefore these are the vision and mission of Desserteur:
 Vision:
Become a provider of dessert box that can be consumed and enjoyed by all
people as an effort to sweeten up their day.
 Mission:
o Prioritizing product’s taste and quality.
o Inovate with all of the opportunities that exist.
o Provide dessert box with economist prices.
o Giving the best services to all costumer.

1.2.4. Products
In starting this business, Desserteur team decided to start with two variants of
dessert box, those are Redveteur and De’Choco dessert box. The price of the dessert
boxes is starts from IDR 12.000 to IDR. 20.000 which are really affordable.

Nowadays, Red Velvet taste is really As we knew, there are a lot of people
catch the interest from people. This who likes chocolate. Therefore we made
variant we made is filled with a red this variant which is filled with a
velvet cake and cream cheese layers chocolate cake, whipped cream and oreo
which the combination of those two biscuits that makes a perfect
components make it taste really good. combinations for chocolate food lovers.

1.3. GOALS
In running the business, Desserteur Team have some expectation to be achieved which
can described by the table below.

2.1.2. Market Survey


Our purposes in making this survey is to get data from prospective costumers
about their interest in dessert culinary. Thus, the data of this survey is taken to be our
consideration in lauching our product variants, price, and selling areas. According to the
survey, we got these following responses.

Because of our Desserteur is a self-made dessert box, it is important for us to
make a recipe trial to get the best flavor for our products. This trial is also important to
calculate our production cost.

We include the packaging fees for those production cost. Desserteur Team also
decided to make a regulation about additional shipping fees for costumers who use Cash-
on-delivery method if the COD point is more than 10 kilometers far.
2.2. SELLING PERIOD
2.2.1. Pre Order and Production Time
Due to the self-production of our dessert box, we use Pre-Order method to make
our sales more organized. The pre-order duration starts on Tuesday and closed on Friday.
The order from those pre order list are made on Friday. During the pre-order period, we
tried to maximized our promotion so it could gain more costumers.

2.2.2. Shipping
Desserteur offer 3 methods of shipment, such as Cash on Delivery, by Gojek or
GrabExpress. We prioritize using Cash on Delivery method to maintain our product
quality during shipping.

2.2.3. Asking Costumer’s Feedback


After weekly sales period is over, our team do after-sales treatment by personally
asking the costumer’s testimonials/feedback about our products after they taste it. Most
of them is really welcome for giving us their review. Thus, if they had any critism or
suggestions, it really helped us to be better on our next production.

After about 2 months running the business, there are some goals that have been
achieved by Desserteur Team but there is also some that haven’t reached yet. The success
rate of our target are explained by the graphic below.
From the data above, it shows that Desserteur Team suceed in achieving three of
its goals. But unfortunately we failed to create the new variant after 1 month sales period.
It is because we run this business during our study so its a little bit hectic to do recipes
trial and create new dessert box variant, therefore we decided to continue selling the same
existing variant.
