Secretary Chairman
IGS Bengaluru Chapter IGS Bengaluru Chapter
Preamble: The Indian Geotechnical Society has constituted a sub-committee SC10 Codes of
Practice, to facilitate exchange of views and evolving a consensus amongst the geotechnical
engineering community in India on best practices and to support the improvement and
updating of codes, standards and guidelines related to geotechnical engineering. SPT being
the most widely used field test in India, it is of great importance to improve the practices in
India in line with international best practices. This workshop is being organized by the SC10
Subcommittee of Indian Geotechnical Society in association with IGS Bengaluru Chapter and
Indian Institute of Science.

Standard Penetration Test is one of the widely used insitu test to estimate Static/Dynamic
Parameters of soils and perform Static analysis of Shallow and deep foundation.

In India, although, SPT procedures are codified as per IS 2131, there are several limitations of
many corrections not included as per the international practice. This results in significant
differences in the N Values by various agencies as many driving systems are adopted (eg. Pin
drop, donut system and automatic hammers). Currently, in India, donut system of driving is
widely adopted (more than 95% of the case). Donut system have been measured to have a
low energy transfer of 25% while the automatic hammer transfers more than 95%, thus the
measured N Value either over predicts or under predicts the engineering parameters. Infact,
IS 1893-2016, highlights various corrections to be adopted for N-Values and not in IS 2131.

The objective of this workshop is to arrive a guidance document to be developed by the Codes
committee of IGS. Some of the salient features and recommendations to amend the code will
be presented to Bureau of Indian Standards.

Dr CR Parthasarathy and Prof P Anbazhagan will deliver talks on the practice and academic
point of view on the standard penetration test and procedures. There will be panel discussion
to hear different points of view as well.

Panelist:
1.Dr DN Naresh: Vice Chairman, Soil and Foundation Engineering Sectional Committee,
