(b) In a spring loaded Hartnell qrpe of governor, the mass of
each ball is 4 kg and lift of the sleeve is 40 mrn. The
governor begins to float at 200 rpm when the radius of
ball path is 90 mm. The mean working speed of the
governor is 16 times the range of speed when friction is
neglected. The lengths of the ball and roller arms of th'e
bell crank lever are 100 mm and 80 mm respectively. The
pivot centre and axis ofthe governor are l15 mm apart.
Determine the initial compression ofthe spring taking into
account the obliquity of arms.
Assuming the friction at the sleeve to be equivalent
to a force of 15 N, determine the total alteration in speed
before the sleeve begins to move from the mid position.

is 35 kg and its center gravity lies 0.5 mm from axis of rotation. The motor is
mounted on five springs of negligible damping, so that the force transmitted is one-
eleventh of the impressed force. Assume that the mass of the motor is equally
distributed zlmong the five springs. Determine

weight of the connecting rod.
(b) A four cylinder vertical engine has cranks 300 mm long. The plane of rotation of the
first, third and fourth cranks are 750 mm, 1050 mm and 1650 mm respectively from
that of the second crank and their reciprocating masses are 10lig, 400 kg and 250 kg
