While researching this topic, I will be conducting primary research in the form of interviews, and
I would like to ask if you could take the time to interview with me for this proposal. I think you
would be an excellent interview with your vast research into emerging markets for various
publications as well as your own books. I would love to talk to you and learn about the research
you have committed to the field.
The interview would last about 30 minutes via Zoom in the next few weeks. Please let me know
what date and time would work best for you.
Thanks,
Nicholas Giguere

Subject Line: Instructions for Interview
Thank you for accepting my request for interview. The interview will be on Zoom for about 30
minutes on Monday June 7th at 4:00 PM. Please ensure your audio and video are working and
your internet connection is stable for the interview. I will send you the meeting link the day of
the interview.
I wanted to provide you the 6 questions I will be asking you in the interview so you can be well
prepared for our conversation:
1. How much impact do developed market fluctuations have on emerging markets, and in
what ways are they more linked?
2. How has the impact of the COVID recession and prior recessions differed between the
markets?
3. How much importance would you, as a scholar in the field, place on regional policy
making as an influencer to returns? MNC’s?
4. What is a piece of advice that you provide international investors when they show interest
in emerging markets?
5. Which industries and sectors tend to drive emerging market returns? In what ways do
these differ from developed markets?
6. How do you see the relative trend of emerging markets progressing in the next decade?
Thank you again for agreeing to a virtual interview for my research proposal. If you have any
questions feel free to reach out and I look forward to getting to talk to you over Zoom.
Thanks,
Nicholas Giguere

academic research paper, heavily focused on expert and highly knowledgeable readers. I chose to
interview Dr Krishna Palepu because of his academic accolades. On top of teaching at the
Harvard Business School for over 38 years, the professor has published multiple academic
articles in the Harvard Business Review, a textbook on valuation, and a book on emerging
markets (President & Fellows of Harvard College). Published in 2010, his latter publication
focused on helping corporations operate in emerging markets. Dr Palepu has also written over 30
articles in various economic and financial journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics
and the Journal of Finance (President & Fellows of Harvard College). With his deep
knowledgeable expert readers, I made several decisions to maintain the same level of
professionalism in my emails. One of the key rhetorical purposes of my emails was to be very
descriptive of the topics I wanted to discuss with Dr Palepu. To express this I made an effort to
use industry terminology and discuss some of my intentions of the research proposal in my
emails. Contributing to this purpose was the focus on the audience I would be conversing with.
As a tenured university professor and avid researcher in the financial industry, it is paramount
that I would express myself in a very professional and respectful manor. Throughout my emails I
spoke very clear and concise to ensure not to waste any of my interviewee’s time. I also made
sure to express my gratitude for his time commitment and how important his voice and
information provided to me was in my research proposal. This respect was also shown through
very clearly stated all the logistical and interview information to Dr Palepu. To ensure I was not
misusing the time he had set aside for my research proposal, providing this information gave him
ample preparedness for the interview and cleared any confusion there could have been regarding
his commitment. This is another way I was able to show my extreme respect and gratitude to
him.
