Dr. Firmani – Lab #4 Pre-Lab questions

1) This barrier allows molecules of a certain size or charge to pass through it, while blocking larger
or differently charged molecules. It is crucial because it allows the cell to maintain its function
and integrity.

2) Osmosis- The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively preamble membrane.

Diffusion- Across semipermeable membrane, smaller molecules can pass freely from one side of
the membrane to the other.

3) The steepness, temperature, surface area of the membrane, and the type of molecule or ion
diffusing.

4) Isotonic- Solutions have the same concentration of solute.

Hypertonic- Two solutions have different concentrations of a solute, the one with more solute.
Hypotonic- Two solutions have different concentrations of a solute, the one with less solute.

5) Diffuse faster, because they have more area to diffuse across the cell.

Potato Block Thickness of ONE black Edge

1 2.5cm x 2.5cm x 2.5cm .2cm
2 2cm x 2cm x 1cm .2cm
3 1.5cm x 1.5cm x 1.5cm .2cm
4 1cm x 1cm x 1cm .3cm
5 2cm x 0.5cm x 0.5cm .3cm
6 0.5cm x 0.5cm x 0.5cm .5cm

4)The smallest (0.5cm) I wasn’t surprised because small surface area-to-volume with smaller surface
area it diffuses faster.

5) The 3 largest (2.5,2cm,1.5cm) I wasn’t surprised because large surface area-to-volume with larger
surface area takes longer to diffuse.

6)

Dialysis Tube Volume Beginning Volume End Gain,Lost,Stayed

Tube A 13 mL 13 mL Stayed
Tube B 10 mL 16 mL Gained
Tube C 13 mL 11 mL Lost

7) A. Isotonic B. Hypertonic C. Hypotonic

8) Tube B , No because it moved to a higher concentration.

9) Tube C , No because it moved out of tube into water it had a less concentration.

10) Tube A, No because it was an even amount of concentration.
