Handout 1: Planning maintenance activities

Planning is important because you can make sure you know:
• what to do
• how you are going to do it
• the order of doing it
• what materials and tools you will need
• how long it will take
• what help you will need

• decide what quality checks to make and when they take place
• identify any problems that may arise
• describe what safety precautions need to be taken

Requirements of your work plan

A work plan must contain all of the information to carry out the task of maintaining the specific device or system. It
should contain at least the following elements:
Specific task description
• non routine maintenance; breakdown or failure
• routine maintenance or servicing
• dismantling
• rebuilding

Specific instructions
• relevant drawings
• manuals
• safety guidance
• ppm records
• parts schedules
• technical specifications; tolerances and fits
• replaceable component settings
