Fury on the 22
You can imagine how frustrated Tracy Lewis (24) of Linton felt after a seven-five minute wait
for the delay number 22 bus last Monday morning. Her frustration turned over anger, however, when
she offered the driver a ten-pound note for her three-pound return fare to the city center. “Sorry,”he
said, “I’m not allowed to take change.”
The new rule, which came into force last week, meant that passengers will have to have the
correct money and/or buy a ticket before boarding the bus.
“I was furious,”said Tracy, “no one of the other passengers had change because they’d all been
caught out in the same way. The bus company should let us know about this in advance.”Tracy, in
desperation, eventually gave the bus driver the ten-pound note, even though she got no change “I
can’t afford to do that everyday!”She commented, “but I have to go to work.”
The local bus company has now apologized for not giving due notice of the new policy but a
spokesman said : “It’s only like a vending machine – you just have to make sure you have the right
money before you leave home. It should make much easier for the buses to run on time if the drivers
don’t have to worry for giving change.”
