1. Name of the Lab: Making a funnel using sheet metal.

2. Objectives:
 Introduction to new tools & their use.
 Understanding of the procedure to obtain a satisfactory funnel.

2. Safety instructions for specific lab:

Essential safety equipment and measures consist of:
 An apron, for the protection of clothing.

 Protective gloves.

 Avoid wearing clothing that might get caught in moving or rotating parts.
Long sleeves of shirts, long hair, necktie and jewelry are definite hazards
in the shop.

4. Equipment /Tools Used:

i. Mallet wood, a wooden hammer. It is a soft hammer used on thin sheets and
jobs. They are used when thickness ranges from 0.4mm to 6mm.
ii. Scale, measuring tape, Compass and scissor.
iii. Scriber, used to mark on metals.
iv. Cross wheel hammer, to turn work piece edges.
v. Sheet metal (work piece), a galvanized iron sheet as it is coated with zinc.
Process for manufacturing a sheet metal funnel;

Markings:
i. Firstly place the work piece on a table and measure its total length. Experimental
length is 1 feet.
ii. Then determine its half by using a measuring tape.
iii. Mark the half at two adjacent points by using a scriber and join them with a line
using scale.
iv. Take margin of 2 inches from the top side as the top corners of funnel are
rounded.
v. Now we will mark the inner and outer diameters,
vi. Take 4 inch as length of outer diameter, and mark the 2 inch length to and fro
the center line. Join the points by a line.
vii. Calculate the height; which is 3.5 inch in this case.
viii. Draw a line perpendicular to height along the work piece and let’s name it base
margin.
ix. Now take 1 inch as length of inner diameter, and mark the 0.5 inch length to and
fro the center line. Join the points by a line.
x. Join the outer diameter points and inner diameter points located in their
respective sides to points located on the center line.
xi. The two points where inner and outer diameter lines meet will be called the
respective center points of the arcs.
xii. By placing the compass on the center point of outer diameter, and opening it till
the line meets the 2 inch margin we marked from center line, we mark an arc.
xiii. By placing the compass on the center point of inner diameter, and opening it till
the line meets the base margin, we mark an arc.
xiv. Place the compass on top center line point (The outer diameter arc) and open it 2
inches.
xv. Mark the first point where the compass tip meets the arc. The again repeat this
step for the second point from the marked point (first) such that total length
obtained from center line point is 4 inches. Repeat this step on other side.
xvi. Place the compass on bottom center line which coincides with base margin and
where the inner diameter arc meets and open it 0.5 inches.
xvii. Mark the first point where the compass tip meets the arc. The again repeat this
step for the second point from the marked point (first) such that total length
obtained from center line point is 1 inch. Repeat this step on other side.
xviii. Now join the bottom marked points (of both arcs) to their respective center line
points.
xix. I.e. join second points of respective arcs to the arcs center points. (see point xi)

Procedure:
i. Cut the work piece with respect to outer and inner diameter markings.
ii. Now use the mallet to straighten the work piece and cut its corners by using
scissor.
iii. Round the edges by using mallet.
iv. The rounded edges must be in the opposite direction so that they can be locked
when the work piece is given a circular shape.
v. Give a round shape of a funnel by pressing against conical apparatus
vi. Finally lock the rounded edges of the workspace and form a joint by hammering.
