1. PSIB 20200911A-R1 Overspeed Test Recommendation for HD GTs & STs without a
Mechanical Bolt
Summary:
- This Overspeed test recommendation is applies to units that have:
All heavy-duty gas turbines and steam turbines without mechanical bolt
Overspeed protection
Mark* VI, Mark* VIe control panels (not applicable to Mark* Ve)
Controllers with shutdown Overspeed test or reduced Overspeed test option
- Units without the capability of doing the shutdown Overspeed test or reduced
Overspeed test can consider the following:
Adding the shutdown/reduced Overspeed test to the software via CM&U
(Need to contact local GE service representative)
Performing the physical Overspeed test per GEKs, TIL 1345 (latest revision)
and/or rotor start up procedure drawings
- In the earlier version of GE Gas turbine is using mechanical bolt protection
- It has 2 protection system, primary and backup. So, it is more reliability. When the
primary protection fails the backup protection will activate.
- The reason to remove the physical Overspeed protection system is:
It is not required for product verification
It adds an unnecessary high-stress cycle to the rotor
It unnecessarily increases the probability of rubs (due to the increased rotor
mechanical growth from the Overspeed centrifugal forces) and therefore risks
unnecessarily, permanently degrading performance of the turbine
The Fired Shutdown Trip Test on gas turbines and Shutdown/Reduced
Overspeed Trip Test on steam turbines are aligned with industry
recommendations from insurance companies and independent
studies/reports
- GE’s recommendation for Overspeed testing of gas turbines and steam turbines
without mechanical bolts and with the automated Shutdown Trip Test capability is
to perform the test via the Fired Shutdown Trip Test on gas turbines and
Shutdown/Reduced Overspeed Trip Test on steam turbines. The modernization of
the control’s software has allowed the use of electrical overspeed circuits which
provides flexibility in executing this test
