 The full armour of God

Let’s look at the articles of our warfare. The full armor of God. The
Bible is clear in 1Peter 5:8

Be sober, (that’s think straight, be alert), be vigilant (be watchful, be

cautious), for your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.

Bottom line is you are a marked man, you are

a marked woman. The accuser, the slanderer
is targeting you. When 2 boxers are
scheduled to fight, they study each other so
that the can take advantage of the
opponent’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities.
Know yourself, know your vulnerabilities.
Deal with the issues that could trip you up,
Put on the full armor of God. Ephesians 6
verse 10 to 17 is our go to passage on our
spiritual armament

Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full
armor of God, so that you can take stand against the devil’s schemes.

The Greek word for schemes is methodeia, where we get the

word method. The enemy is methodical, structured, organized in
his trickery. He studies us and focuses on our weaknesses

2 Corinthians 2:11, talking about Satan, our adversary

..we are not unaware of his schemes

We have Satan’s MO, we aware of his devices, his schemes, the

order of his wicked spiritual kingdom

..for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. – Ephesians
6:11

The kingdom of darkness is very

real. If you are not part of the
redeemed, you remain under the
domain of Satan, no middle ground,
no demilitarized zone.

Colossians 1:13 states

..who hath delivered is from the dominion of darkness and has

transferred us to the Kingdom of the Son of his love.

The word stand is used 4 times in Ephesians 6, to stand means to

take a firm stance, digging in with your heels, resilient.

Verse 13 states

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil
comes, you may be able to stand, and after you have done everything
to stand, stand firm

So after you’ve done everything to stand, stand some more.

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with
the breastplate of righteousness in place and with your feet fitted with
the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all
this take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all
flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the
sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.

The letter of Ephesians is what is termed a prison epistle, Paul the

Apostle under house arrest would have been chained to the
soldier on duty and would have become familiar with the armor
the Roman soldiers wore.

The 6 articles of the armor are representative of the equipment

we need to have or wear to be able to stand firm when the day of
evil comes, that day is coming. The armor is about standing firm,
resisting. Every article but 1 of the armor is defensive or
protective.

So that you may be able to stand in the day of evil.

The belt of truth,

The belt the Roman soldiers wore was a wide

belt that held the sword or dagger, and had
an apron looking attached to it that was
decorated with metal studs representing
ranks. The belt was protective of the lower
abdomen

The belt of truth, speaks of our truth, our reality. Knowledge of

our position, who we are in Christ, our rank. The belt held or was
attached to other articles.

The breastplate of righteousness.

The breastplate protected the upper torso

where the heart is. The heart is the source
of our lifestyle

…above all else, guard your heart for

everything you do flows from it – Prov 4:23

Righteousness is about doing the right

thing, the righteous do righteousness. The
breastplate speaks of protecting the
source of your integrity, your moral compass, your faith life.

The breastplate was attached to the belt by hoops. You had to

wear the belt first before the breastplate. Your righteousness is
based on truth, what you know. Remember we have to put it on
the full armor. The armor is referred to as the armor of God,
because it’s provided by God to resist the Devil with

The purpose of the armor is that we may be able to stand in the

day of adversity

…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the
gospel of peace that’s verse 15

The shoes the soldier wore were

heavily soled leather sandals with
spikes underneath which allowed
them to fight in all sorts of terrains,
always ready.

Verse 16 reads

above all, taking the shield of faith with which

you will be able to quench all the ery darts of the wicked one.

Faith here is given preeminence for its ability to

quench the fiery darts of the devil, that’s to
make of no effect the devils attacks. Attacks on
your health, finances, family and much more
can all be quenched by the shield of faith

The Roman soldiers of that period carried a

large shield that covered the entire soldier
from head to toe.

Faith is the bridge that makes your hopes

reality. That force that allows God to work on your behalf. Faith is
what allowed Abraham to be pronounced as righteous. Faith is
what allows you to please God.

… so above all take up the shield of faith.

The Helmet of salvation, the word for helmet in Greek is a

compound word bringing 2 words together and means, “around
the head.” The helmet was meant to protect the head from
impact, they were variations of helmets with some with a gauze to
protect the eyes.

Guard your mind, protect your sight.

Your salvation is essential in
guarding what you allow in your
mind, the things that see, your
perceptions, your opinions, your
world views. Let your salvation form
your mindset

Matthew 6:22, states

… the eye is the lamp of the body. If

your eyes are good, your whole body is
full of light

The eye is the doorway to your mind

and soul. What you see and your
perceptions should be guarded
jealously with your salvation. Salvation has connotations of
wholeness and deliverance.

The helmet of your salvation, your deliverance is what protects

your mind. So actively allow your transformation by filtering what
passes in into your mind.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by

the renewing of your mind - Romans 12:2

The only offensive weapon described as part of the armor of God

is the sword of the spirit.

The Roman sword was short double edged and tapered to allow
for both slashing and stabbing. To allow for a firm grip the hilt
was ridged and knobbed to keep it from slipping.

The sword of the spirit is described

as the word of God. Let me break
that down just a bit. The
effectiveness of the spirit of God in
your battles is very much dependent
on your skill level with the word of
God.

The more of the scriptures you know

and understand the bigger and
frequent your victories.

Hebrews 5:13 and 14 states

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness,
for his a babe. But solid food belongs to those are of full age, that is, those who by
reason of CONSTANT use have their senses exercised to discern both good and
evil.
It’s the constant use, the frequent studying of the word that
makes you more skillful with the word, it’s the training that makes
you a better swordsman effective in battle, winning frequently

You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free -John 8:32

It’s what you know that guarantees victorious Christian living.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and lauds the
benefits of knowing the word. The psalmist uses words like
precepts, law, commandments, instruction all to describe the
word of God, the sword of the spirit.

Your word have I hidden in my heart so that I might not sin against
you. that’s verse 11

My soul clings to the dust, revive me according to your word. that’s

verse 25

Thy word is a lamp onto my feet and a light onto my path.

Psalm 119:105

The psalm is loaded with the benefits of becoming a skilled Bible

swordsman

The apostle Paul concludes the armor of God discourse by adding

an additional activity

..praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit. That’s
verse 18 of Ephesians 6

Prayer is the boost for the believer, it’s like the energy pack for the
christian.

Jude 1:20 says this

..building yourselves up on your most holy

faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
