Activity Sheet
Transformer, Generator, and Calculation of Electric Energy

Activity 1: Step it down! Step it up!

Objective:
At the end of the activity, students should be able to identify the type and position of
transformer to be utilized in specific task.

Materials: Pen and paper

Procedure:
1. Observe the picture below.
2. Cite the step up and down transformer and each specific function by filling up the
table below the picture.
3. Answer the guide questions below the table.

Type of Transformer Function

The step-up transformer is a type of transformer with the function of

converting low voltage (LV) and high current from the transformer's primary

side to high voltage (HV) and low current value on the transformers'
secondary side.
A Step-down Transformer is a type of transformer, which converts a high
voltage at the primary side to a low voltage at the secondary side. If we
2.Step-down Transformer
speak in terms of the coil windings, the primary winding of a Step down
Transformer has more turns than the secondary winding.
3.One to one Transformer Also called as an isolation transformer block interference caused by ground
loops.

Guide Questions:

1. What are the types of transformer being used in the image?

Step-Up and Step-down transformer.

2. What type of transformer is being used in point 1 of the image? Why is this type of
transformer being used?
Step-Up transformer is being used in point 1 of the image. This type of
transformer is being used because  at power stations to produce the very high voltages
needed to transmit electricity through the National Grid power lines. These high voltages are too
dangerous to use in the home.

3. What type of transformer is being used in point 2 of the image? Why is this type of
transformer being used?
Step-down transformer is being used in point 2 of the image. This type of
transformer is being used locally to reduce the voltage to safe levels.

4. What type of transformer is being use in point 3 of the image? Why this type of
transformer is being used?
A one-to-one transformer being use in point 3 of the image. This type of
transformer is being used to protect secondary circuits and individuals from electrical shocks
between energized conductors and earth ground.

5. What are the applications of a step-up transformers and step- down transformers?
Step-up and step-down transformers use electromagnetic induction to convert voltage between
two circuits. We use both types in the distribution of power from supply stations to the end user, as
well as to ensure that the appropriate voltage goes into a circuit on many personal devices.

6. Why is it important to use transformer?

Transformers help improve safety and efficiency of power systems by raising and lowering voltage
levels as and when needed. They are used in a wide range of residential and industrial applications,
primarily and perhaps most importantly in the distribution and regulation of power across long
distances.
Activity 2: Simple Generator

Objectives:
At the end of the activity, students should be able to:
a) discuss how electricity is generated from magnets and coil of wire; and
b) relate the motion of a simple electric generator to the motion of an actual
generator being used in a real-life electric power plant.

Materials: Pen and paper

Procedure:
Observe the picture below and answer the guide questions.

Guide Questions:
1. From the image above, give the name of the device and its function.
It's a device that receives mechanical energy from an external source and converts it to
electrical energy. It's important to know that a generator does not create electrical power. It
simply forces the motion of the existing electrical charges in the wire of its windings by
using the external mechanical power.
Generators produce the electrical power required for automobiles, aircraft, ships, and
trains.
2. What serves as the force to rotate the propeller? What serves as the turbine?
In the image above, the wind serves as the force to rotate the propeller. Propeller serves as
the turbine.
3. If the propeller rotates at a sufficient speed, what will happen to the coil of wire or
armature inside?
It can produce electricity.
4. How does the device produce electricity?
The generator produce electricity by capturing the power of motion ( which is the propeller
that is blown by the wind) and turning it into electrical energy by forcing electrons from the external
source through an electrical circuit.
Activity 3: Calculate your Electricity

Objectives:
At the end of the activity, students should be able to describe how electric power is
measured and calculate the electrical energy.

Materials: Pen and paper

Procedure:
Read and answer the following problems.

1. The air conditioner in the faculty room is in use for 9 hours every day and it uses 2.7
kW. How much energy is used by the air conditioner in a day?

E=Pt
E=(2.7kW) (9h)
E=24.3kWh

2. From item No. 1, how much does the total operation if electrical energy costs 8.6
pesos per kWh?
Cost = (24.3kWh) (8.6 pesos/kWh)
=208.98 pesos
