Lab 2 Lathe and Turning Operations

A. Objective
The objective of this lab is to understand the structure of lathes, cutting tools, fixtures,
and accessories used on a lathe, and to experience turning processes from practice.

B. Background and Theory

Refer to text (Kalpakjian Chapter 8 and lecture materials).

C. Laboratory Work
The shop supervisor will explain and perform a turning demo on a lathe described below:

1. Structure and components of lathe
– Bed – Spindle – Tool post
– Headstock – Carriage and apron – Feed change gear box
– Tailstock – Cross slide – Feed rod and leadscrew

2. Motions of lathe
Main cutting motion
– Rotation of spindle (with fixture and workpiece)
– Change of spindle speed
Feed motion
– Axial feed motion
– Radial feed motion
– Threading feed by means of leadscrew
– Feed by tailstock
– Change of feedrate

3. Cutting tools
– Turning tools, facing tools, boring tools, threading tools, drills, reamers, tapping
tools, etc.

4. Fixtures and accessories

– Three-jaw chuck, four-jaw chuck
– Centers

5. Step-by-step machining process

D. Documentation
1. Objective
2. Main Body
(1) Hand-sketch or include a photo of the lathe you saw in the machine shop and illustrate its
overall structure, components, and motions (for example, motions of major moving parts).
(2) Hand-sketch or include photos of various cutting tools you saw in the machine shop.
(3) Describe how a workpiece is loaded in a three-jaw chuck and a four-jaw chuck, and between
centers.
(4) Describe a step-by-step procedure of machining a workpiece by simple turning.
(5) List and describe the types of machining processes that can be performed on a lathe.
