NARRATIVE REPORT
CAPACITY BUILDING ON DRRM MODULES CUM
PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID TRAINING FOR DRRM COORDINATORS
September 17-21, 2018

A disaster is a natural or man-made event that negatively affects life, property, livelihood
or industry often resulting in permanent changes to human societies, ecosystems and
environment. It is highly disruptive that cause suffering, deprivation, hardship, injury, disease
and destruction of critical infrastructures. Teachers are being trained with basic life support in
cases of emergencies.
The Division of Oriental Mindoro DRRM coordinators conducted 5-day training on
psychological first aid. This aid aims to help children, youth and adults suffering from trauma or
depression after disaster. The training was held at Apartelle de Francesca, San Isidro, Puerto
Galera, Oriental Mindoro last September 17-21, 2018. The itineraries of the training were
documented.
On the first day, registration of participants, introduction of participants and facilitators,
breaking down of expectations and citing of house rules were the activities. The facilitators were
Sir John Carlo Malicsi, Mrs. Mary Grace T. Famorcan, Mrs. Bessa M. Buenconsejo and Sir
Francoise Marie C. Gubatan.
On the second day, the topics were the DRRM modules in relation to school disaster risk
reduction management and the introduction to psychological first aid. The module highlighted
the important tools that a school should have like siren, fire extinguishers, fire alarm, emergency
hotlines and DRRM tarpaulin. The 4 Steps in Implementing DRRM were also cited: Assess
Plan, Implement Plan and Monitor, Evaluate and Report. RADAR(Rapid Assessment of
Damages Report was also highlighted. According to Sir Malicsi, the school DRRM coordinator
should report or send radar with or without damages and in correct format. TLS(Temporary
Learning Spaces was also a hot topic. It is defined as safe, inclusive and child-friendly. The last
topic in the morning was the student-led school watching and hazard mapping wherein students
identify hazards in school. Afternoon session is about the introduction on psychological first aid
where 3L’s were identified: Look, Listen and link. Activities were Music Art, Student-Led
Hazard Mapping and identifying needs after a disaster.
On the third day, Link was the highlight of the session. Activities were breathing
exercises, guided imagery, my playlist and stepping on tiles with numbers and finding flags.
Throughout the activities, coordinators were given the chance to share their experiences with
their group mates. As the activities goes along, friendship and trust were created.
On the fourth day, application of all the learning was the final activity. The participants
applied all the activities they have learned from module 1 up to module 4. The highlight of the
activity was psychological first aid.
On the fifth day, sharing of insights and awarding of certificates were the activities. It
was a very successful training. Participants have learned a lot of experiences from the training.
