SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATH 9

March 25, 2021

I- OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the period, the students shall be able to; equivalent inseparable
 simplify radical expressions;
 identify similar and dissimilar radicals;
 perform addition and subtraction of radical expressions using laws of radicals.

II- SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic : Find My Pair (Addition And Subtraction of Radical Expressions)
B. References : Learner’s Material for Mathematics Grade 9, PP 251-260
: www.google.com & www.yahoo.com. Images Search Engine
C. Materials : Laptop and LCD
D. Subject Integration : English – 4 PICS 1 WORD & Literacy, Arts – Pictures and Design
E. Values Integration : Show teamwork and participation among students in the activity.
F. Content Standard : The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadratic
equations, inequalities and functions, and rational algebraic equations
G. Competency : Perform addition and subtraction on radical expression
H. Code : M9AL-IIh-1

III- STRATEGIES:
Teacher's Activity
Preliminaries:
 In a minute, we will start our class discussion. May I request Sir/Ma’am _____________ to
lead the prayer.
 Good Morning Class.
 Please sit down and prepare for our lesson
 Checking of attendance “May I know who are absents?” “Kindly count off”
 Checking of assignments "Do we have an assignment?
So, how are you today?
Alright!
"Before anything else."
"May I ask you something? How to make a meaningful and productive discussion?
"Be cooperative, responsive and attentive all throughout the lesson discussion’’.

 As a sort of review, anybody "What was our topic last time?”

Very Good!

 How could you transform exponential expressions to radical expressions & vice versa?
Very Good!
 Motivation:
Since you already have the knowledge of what was all about radicals, let’s have an activity.

(4 PICS 1 WORD)
Based on the activity that we had, what do you think is our topic for today?
Very good!

Now, in connection to our topic, let's have our discussion through the ff. objectives.

(Reading of Objectives)
1. simplify radical expressions;
2. identify similar and dissimilar radicals;
3. perform addition and subtraction of radical expressions using the laws of radicals.
LESSON PROPER
A. ANALYSIS
How did you find our activity today? Is it interesting? Have you learned something?
May I ask somebody to give an example of radical expression?
Very good!
(Teacher gives further analysis on radical expressions through PowerPoint presentation.)
B. ABSTRACTION
 Two or more radicals can only be added & subtracted to a single radical if the radical
parts are similar.
 √ 2 & 3 √ 2 ----- SIMILAR √ 3∧¿ √3 3 ----- DISSIMILAR
EXAMPLES:
1. 2 √3+ 4 √ 3 =6 √ 3

3 3
2. 6 √ x−√ x+5 √ x =5 √ x+5 √ x

3. √ 16+ √ 25− √81 =0

4. 3 √ 12−2 √ 3 =3 √ 4.3−2 √ 3
=3(2) √3−2 √3
=4 √3

Do you have any question?, if none, let’s proceed to our another activity.
C. ACTIVITIES
 Activity 1 (Let’s Simplify!)
Direction: Simplify each of the following. Assume that the variables are positive.

 Activity 2 (Like Radicals or Not?)

Direction: Identify each of the following pair of radicals as like radicals or not. If they
are like radicals write if not draw
 Activity 3 (Let’s Add and Subtract Radicals!)
Direction: Add or subtract each of the following radical expressions.

Let us give a hand for your very good presentation.

Thank you, class. Very well presented.
D. APPLICATION
 With your knowledge gained in the addition and subtraction of radical expressions. How
would you apply what you have learned to real-life situation?

 Identify the side lengths of a square box or the dimensions of a square lot if you know
its area?
 Solve for the length of any side of a right triangle?
 Find the radius of a cylindrical water tank?

IV- ASSESSMENT
What is the name of the 4th highest mountain in the world?
Direction: Decode the answer by finding the sum and difference of the following radical expressions.
Write the letter of the answer corresponding to the item in the box provided below.

V- ENRICHMENT
Direction: Find the sum or difference of each radical expressions.
