‘Standard Specification for Corrosion-Resistant Iron-Chromium, Iron-Chromium-Nickel and Nickel Based Alloy Castings for General Application AASHTO DESIGNATION: M 163/M 163M-89 (ASTM DESIGNATION: A 743/A 743M-87b) SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers iroo- chromium and iron-chromium-nickel alloy castings for general corrosion-resistant application. The grades covered by this specification represent types of alloy cast- ings suitable for broad ranges of applica- tion which are intended fora wide variety of corrosion environments. NOTE 1—For alloy castings for severe coro- siog-resistant service, refereace should be made to M 285IM 285M, for Castings, Iron-Chromi ‘umNickel, Nickel Base, Corrosion Resistant for Severe Service. For general heatresstant alloy castings, reference should be made t0 [ASTM A 297/A 297M, for Stel Castings, Iron- Chromium and lro-ChromiumNickel, Heat Resistant, for General Application. For nickel alloy castings for corrosion resistant service, reference should be made to ASTM ‘A444 494M, 1.2. The values stated in either inch- pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard, Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact ‘equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Com- bining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specifi- catioa. Tnch-pound units are applicable for material ordered to M 163 and SI units for material order to M 163M. 2. GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR DELIVERY 3.1 Material furnished to this specifi- cation shall conform to the applicable requirements of ASTM A 781/A 781M including the supplementary requirements that are indicated on the purchase order. ORDERING INFORMATION 4.1. Orders for material to this specifi- ‘cation shall include the following, as required, to describe the material ade- quately: 4.11 Description of the casting by pattern number or drawing. 412 Grade, 4.13 Hest teatmeat, 4.14 Options in the specification, and 415 Where a weldable 6-29 Alloy is desired, Grade M354 shouldbe ordered, 4.1.6 Supplementary requirements desired including te standards of acceptance. 5. PROCESS S.A The steel shall be made by the clectric furnace process with or without separate refining such as argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD). 6, HEAT TREATMENT 6.1 Castings shall be heat treated in accordance with the requirements in Table 1 7. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS 7. The chemical requirements are shown in Table 2. 8. REPAIR BY WELDING 8.1. Repair welding of Grade CA-28MWV is not permitted unless by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser 8.2 When methods involving high ttmperature are use inthe removal of discontinuities, castings shal be preheated 231 232 in accordance with Table 4. Weld repairs shall be subject to the same quality stan dards as are used to inspect the castings. 8.3 Post weld heat treatment, if required, hall be in accordance with Table 1. 8.3.1 The martensitic grades CA- 6NM, CA-15, CA-ISM, and CA-40 shall be retempered after weld repairing, except that local tempering will be permitted if, in the opinion of the manufacturer, fur- nace heat treating will be damaging to the finished surface of a machined casting. Heat treatment, other than tempering, of grades CA-6NM, CA-15, CA-I5M, and CA-40 after weld repairing shall be per- formed only when agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser, Weld repair on Grade CA-40F is not recom- mended because of the risk of local hard- ‘ening and possible cracking in the heat affected zone. 8.3.2 Post weld heat treatment is not required on the other grades of this speci fication. When post weld heat treatment is believed necessary for adequate corrosion resistance in the service environment, castings should be ordered in accordance with AASHTO M 285/M 285M. Grade CES, CG-8M, CG-12, C20, CF-8M CRC, CF-16F CF-16Fa (CH-20, CE-30, CK20 (CAMS, CA-ISM, CA-40, CA40F SPECIFICATIONS FOR MATERIALS 9. PRODUCT MARKING 9.1. Castings shall be marked for material identification with the ASTM. specification number (A.743/A 743M) and grade symbol, that is, CF:8, CA-15, CB30, ete In addition, the manufactur- e's name or identification mark and the patter number shall be castor stamped ‘sing the lowstress stamps on all east ings. Smal-sze castings may be such that marking must be limited consistent with the available area. The marking of heat agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. Marking shall be in such position as not to injure the useful- ness of the casting, 10. REJECTION AND REHEARING 10.1 Samples that represent rejected ‘material shall be preserved for 2 weeks from the date of transmission of the rejec~ tion report. In case of dissatisfaction with the results ofthe tests, the manufacturer TABLE 1 Heat Treatment Requirements Hea Treatment Heat to 1900°F (1040°C] minimum, bold for sufficiot time to beat casting to temperature, quench in water oF rapid cool by other means so a to develop accepable corrosion resistance.
