General Instruction:
I. All questions are compulsory.
II. Question No. 1 to 3 carry one mark each.
III. Question No. 4 to 7 carries two marks each.
IV. Question No. 8 to 10 carries three marks each.
V. Question No.11 and 12 carries 5 marks.

Question 1:
(1)
Particles of masses 2M, m and M are respectively at points A, B and C with AB = ½ (BC). m is much-
much smaller than M and at time t = 0, they are all at rest (Fig. below). At subsequent times before
any collision takes place:

(a) m will remain at rest.
(b) m will move towards M.
(c) m will move towards 2M.
(d) m will have oscillatory motion.

Question 2:
(1)
The centre of mass of an extended body on the surface of the earth and its centre of gravity
(a) are always at the same point for any size of the body.
(b) are always at the same point only for spherical bodies.
(c) can never be at the same point.
(d) is close to each other for objects, say of sizes less than 100 m.
(e) both can change if the object is taken deep inside the earth.

Question 3:
(1)

(a) the acceleration due to gravity on earth will be different for different objects.
(b) none of the three laws of Kepler will be valid.
(c) only the third law will become invalid.
(d) for n negative, an object lighter than water will sink in water.

Question 4:
(2).
What is the angle between the equatorial plane and the orbital plane of
(a) Polar satellite? (b) Geostationary satellite?

Question 5: (2)
The gravitational force between a hollow spherical shell (of radius R and uniform density) and a
point mass is F. Show the nature of F vs r graph where r is the distance of the point from the centre
of the hollow spherical shell of uniform density.

Question 6: (2)
A satellite is revolving is a circular path close to a planet of density P. find an expression for its period
of revolution?

Question 7: (2)
How far away from the surface of earth does the value of g is reduced to 4% of its value on the
surface of the earth Given radius of earth = 6400km.

Question 8:
(3)
Find expressions for (1) potential energy (2) kinetic energy (3) total energy for an artificial satellite.

Question 9:
(3)
A Saturn year is 29.5 times the earth year. How far is the Saturn from the sun if the earth is 1.5 x 108
km away from the sun?

Question 10: (3)

A star 2.5 times the mass of the sun and collapsed to a size of 12 km rotates with a speed of 1.2 rev.
per second. (Extremely compact stars of this kind are known as neutron stars. Certain stellar objects
called pulsars belong to this category). Will an object placed on its equator remain stuck to its
surface due to gravity? (Mass of the sun = 2 x 1030 kg)

Question 11: (5)

i) Define Gravitational potential energy Hence deduces an expression for gravitational potential
energy of a body placed at a point sear the surface of earth?

ii) Io, one of the satellites of Jupiter, has an orbital period of 1.769 days and the radius of the orbit is
4.22 x 108 m. Show that the mass of Jupiter is about one-thousandth that of the sun.

Question 12:
(5)

A rocket is fired 'vertically' from the surface of mars with a speed of 2 km/s . If 20% of its initial
energy is lost due to Martian atmospheric resistance, how far will the rocket go from the surface of
mars before returning to it? Mass of mars =6.4 x 1023 kg; radius of mars = 3395 km; G = 6.67 x 10-11
Nm2 /kg2.
