Abstract: The title of this research is Analysis of Moral Value in The Martian Movie by
Ridley Scot. The purposes of this research is to analyze moral value in The Martian Movie by
Ridley Scot. In this research, the writer uses descriptive qualitative methods proposed by
Creswell in Restu Pitri (2018) which uses descriptive technique to describe and analyze the
data. The data on this research was got from dialogues, quotes, script and scenes in The
Martian Movie by Ridley Scot. The steps are watching the movie repeatedely, reading the
dialogue and the script, write the information that contain moral value on note book, and
recheck the data. The data was analyzed through some ways which are, identifying,
classifying, analyzing and make the conclusion. In this research, the writer used theory from
Linda and Eyre’s in Restu Pitri (2018), that are found in some kinds of moral value such as
bravery, love and affection, honesty loyality, fair and justic in The Martian Movie by Ridley
Scot .

I. BACKGROUND OF THE is a movie that adapted from Andy Weir's

RESEARCH
Nowadays many people love to
watching the movies, and by watching the
movies has become a hobby for some
people. Many people do not pay much
attention to the moral values that
contained in the movie. This research aims
Analysis of Moral Value in The Martian
Movie by Ridley Scot.. The Martian
Movie by Ridley Scot is a science fiction
movie starring Matt Damon . This movie
tells about An astronaut becomes stranded
on Mars after his team assume him dead,
and must rely on his ingenuity to find a
way to signal to Earth that he is alive
(IMDb, 2015). This movie was released in
2015. The Martian Movie by Ridley Scot
novel of the same name. The Martian
movie tells about the journey of an
astronaut named Mark Watney who was
left behind by his crew when they went to
the planet Mars. Mark is abandoned by
his crew after a huge storm hits them in
Mars and one of his team named Melissa
thinks Mark is dead. Mark, who turns out
to be still alive on Mars, and he must
survive on Mars alone with the few tools
he has. Mark also has find a way out in
order to get a signal to earth as a sign that
he is still alive and still surviving on Mars.
For this reason, there are many moral
values contained in The Martian movie by
Ridley Scot which is an adventure, drama
and sci-fi genre.

analyze and to find out the good impact of
Moral Value on main characters in The
Martian Movie by Ridley Scot
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
Wellek and Warren in Restu Pitri
(2018) state that literature is one creative
an art. It means that literature can be made
in form of an art based on the imagination,
thinking, and experience into written
form, so it becomes one of literature work.
It means that literature can create
imagination and used word choice which
interested. As an imagination act,
literature is expressed through language
by an author, is the essentially thing in
creating a literary work because it the one

Through literary work, the author is able
to express and create something which is
interesting. Literary work is one of human
to make something which chose word
interesting or beautiful. One example of
literary work is Drama. Drama is part of
the literary work which is intended to

movie.
According to Turner in Restu Pitri
(2018), Movie is not only reflection of
reality in society but it is also
representation of reality in society. Movie
as reflection of reality means that movie is
only moving the reality into the screen
without changes the reality itself. While
movie as representation of reality means
that movie formed and represented the
reality based on ideology, conventions and
codes of its culture. This opinion is also
supported by Mc Quail in Restu Pitri
(2018) explained that movie is one of
mass media that can reach to big
population quickly, even it reached to

rural areas. Watching the movie gives us
more imagination in our mind and have
the freedom to analyze message that
occurs in the movie. One of the messages
in movie is moral value. Moral value has
the yardstick which measures a person in
doing something positive or negative
value.
Hazlitt in Restu Pitri (2018) states
that Moral is deciding good or bad
considered behavior. According to Bertenz
in in Restu Pitri (2018), Moral value is
value that must be separated with other
values. Every value will get quality if it
has relation with other values. Moral value
concerns something good and bad for
human to change in one’s life. It is should
be effectively applied in life. According to
Linda and Eyre in Chairina Nasir (2019),
moral value is a result of valuing the
process of human values in life. It is a
significant element in this life because it
guides people to be a better person. In this
paper, moral value is one of the most
important elements of a movie, because it
presents good and bad values through the
stories in a movie and contains material to
be a lesson that could be implemented in
one’s life.
According to Linda and Eyre in
Restu Pitri (2018) in the movie contains
some kinds of Moral Value which are :
1. Bravery : Bravery
is able to meet danger or endure
pain or hardship without giving in
to fear. People can take some of
the choices in life and certainly
has consequences that are
comparable with the result that
will be found (Linda and Eyre in
Restu Pitri , 2018).
2. Love and Affection : Love is
a deep feeling felt by individual
and it has a meaning. It is difficult
to describe and express by words,
it is poured in the form of
attention and action. Linda and
Eyre in Chairina Nasir (2019)
state that love is the deepest
expression of longing and feeling
whereas affection is defined as
one of the human instincts. It
could be defined as feelings of
dear to someone Love and
Affection is a strong love for
friend, neighbors, and of love for
family (Linda in Restu Pitri,
2018). People live with their own
problems, life is not easy. God
always give affection and his love
for the human.
3. Honesty : Honesty
is the suitability between what is
delivered or spoken in accordance
with the action. Honesty has a
sense of compatible with the facts
that exist and nothing to hide.
Linda and Eyre in Chairina Nasir
(2019) state that honesty is the
same as the inner strength and
confidence that is bred by exiting
truthfulness, trustworthiness, and
integrity. According to Johnson
and Phillips in Chairina Nasir
(2019) , honesty involves more
than speaking the truth because
speaking is only half of the
communication process or
compatibility with reality or fact.
Honesty is the inner strength,
confidence, that is bred by
exacting and integrity (Linda in
Restu Pitri, 2018) Honesty is tells
the truth, everyone likes it. Telling
the truth allows everyone to know
what is exactly happened and help
people feel safe and peaceful
inside.

4. Loyalty : Loyalty
is the earnestness in implementing
and carrying out something.
Loyalty is not only a matter of the
action, but also a matter of how to
think, and how to motivate (Keller
in Chairina Nasir 2019) . Loyalty
to family, to work, to state, to the
school and to organization and
other institution are responsible to
us. Support, to serve, to help,
trusted and in carrying out
consistence promises (Linda in
Restu Pitri, 2018
5. Fair and Justice :
According to Linda and Eyre in
Chairina Nasir (2019), justice is
the adherence to fairness, law,
play, and work. An understanding
of natural consequences and the
law of cause and effect.
Appreciate the generous and for
giving and understand that
revenge is futile (Linda in Restu
Pitri, 2018).
III. METHODOLOGY
In this research, the writer uses
descriptive qualitative methodology.
According to Creswell in Restu Pitri
(2018) descriptive method is an inquiry
process of understanding based on
building a complex, holistic picture,
analyzes words, and report detailed views
of information.
Nawawi in Restu Pitri (2018)
states that descriptive method is a research
method to describe the subject or object of
the research based on the fact or the
reality. While, Whitney in Restu Pitri
(2018) state that descriptive qualitative is
fact finding with the right interpretation.
Meanwhile, the data derived from the
script, file notes, photographs, video type,
personal documents, and other official
documents.
Based on the statement above, it
can be concluded that qualitative research
is all about exploring issue, understanding
phenomena and answering question, detail
data is gathered through open ended
question than provide direct quotations. In
this research, qualitative research is the
most appropriate method, because
qualitative research conducts with no
emphasis on the figures, but the emphasis
appreciation of the interaction between
concepts which are empirically examined.
In this research, the writer uses some ways
to get information as the data in this
research.
A. Technique of Collecting Data In
collecting the data of this research, the
writer uses some techniques. The
techniques that used by the researcher are:

2. The writer watches The Martian Movie
by Ridley Scot repeatedly
3. The writer collect the data from The
Martian Movie by Ridley Scot.
4. The writer write the data from the
movie and dialogue that contain moral

the title of this research.
B. Technique of Analyzing Data In this
research
The writer uses qualitative method
to analyze the data, because the data of
this research in form of words and
sentence or this is used a qualitative
method, the data it would be analyzed
through interpreting not statistic analysis.
It means that the result of this research it
expected be presented in descriptive
analysis based on the method and the data
that writer’s used. In analyzing the data,
the writer watches The Martian Movie by
Ridley Scot as the main data.
Here are the steps that research uses in
analyzing the data of the research:
1. Identifying
The research identifies the data
that was collected before it. In this
research, the writer only focuses on kinds
of moral value and main character that
present moral value.
2. Classifying
The writer classifies that data
based on the importance of this research.
3. Analyzing
In this step, the writer analyzes the
scenes and text that contained of kinds of
moral value on the movie. The research
will analyze by using moral approaches.
4. Making Conclusion
Finally the writer makes the
conclusion, suggestion and drawing
conclusion from the analysis.

team can finally communicate with the

V. CONCLUSION
The Martian movie by Ridley
Scot is a film that tells the story of an
astronaut stranded on Mars after his team
thinks he is dead from a storm on Mars,
and he must rely on his ingenuity and
courage to survive so he can find a way to
signal to Earth that he is still alive. This
film contains a lot of moral values . moral
value can be interpreted as a human value.
In The Martian Movie by Ridley Scot
contain some kinds of moral values there
are bravery, love and affection, honesty,
loyality, and fair and justice.
Loyalty and justice are the moral
values that most writers found in the
analysis of The Martian Movie by Ridley
Scot. which one is from Linda in Restu
Pitri, 2018 Love and Affection is a strong
love for friends, neighbors, and of love for
